I wasn't certain where to post this.

My family is in from Switzerland (we are in California). I wanted to buy them a Wii to take back with them...I know a power outlet adapter is needed, but does anyone know of any other issues? Watching movies is not prioity, only games.

Any help is apprecaited.

A remake of Gershwin's classic: "An American Wii in Paris"

A must-see this summer!

"They don't sell Wii in Switzerland?"

Well, they do, but it's to be a gift. I don't see my cousins often (every 5-6 years) so I tend to miss a lot.

I'm not certain if they have an HDTV.

Are the TVs NTSC, PAL, or SECAM? Also, will the Wiis over here play the games that are sold in Europe?

The Wii does not play movies. Their PAL televisions will likely support NTSC signals, but an EDTV or HDTV supporting widescreen 480p and Wii component cables would be best. It will need to be modded or soft-modded to play European games. The new Wiis currently in stores are not mod-friendly, at least as far as soft-modding is concerned. Buy a used one sold in 2008 or earlier (you can always check the purchase date by calling SIRIS and putting in the serial number).

Even without playing movies the standards are completely different. PAL only has a 50 hz refresh rate while NTSC is 60 hz.

Has anyone skipped the obvious: are wii games not region locked?

Duh. What about it? I said that it will likely support NTSC because most PAL TVs support NTSC and, consequently, now support PAL60. EDTV is 60hz everywhere, so any set accepting 480p will be fine, assuming you can get the Wii set to 480p.

Doesn't europe effectively get the japanese version of things? i.e. the games they buy in switzerland won't work on an american system.

this is true of most things

Take the metric system,

the rest of the modern world uses it, but usa doesnt. When is the us going to catch up with the rest of the world?

Ugh. When did the metric system come from Japan and what does that have to do with region coding? FWIW, the US and Japan share a BD region code but not a DVD or Wii region while Europe only sometimes shares regions with Australia or other PAL regions. They didn't "get" the Japanese version of anything. Anyway, eLiu, I already answered that: You mod the system and it will play European games. The only concern will be making sure that they don't allow a European game to update it.

I think the updates that are present in new european PAL games will brick an NTSC Wii.

Stop Posting.

eLiu: Almost all consoles are region locked (with Europe making up one region). IIRC, the PS3 is open to games from all region, but it is unusual in that respect.

best bet is to let them play yours while they are at your house... and just give them the money and let them buy a wii when they get home.

Not one with BootMii installed, hence, my recommendation of a pre-2009 Wii.

Or buy a 3rd party or official replacement adapter back home.

Yeah, probably the better idea. No need to teach them how to download and burn ISOs to get the latest US updates or how to use homebrew apps to play Europeangames without updating, etc. Considering that they likely have no interest in piracy or backups...

How about ordering one online from a EU retailer and having to shipped to their house?

Why not just give them cash then. I don't know if Wii point gift cards work world wide, but maybe get one of those and stuff some cash in it or something. Sure beats going through all the trouble of figuring out how to hook up a NA Wii to an EU TV.
