I think the "killer app" here is for notebooks. Makes them run games faster and with less power draw.

Yea. Someone with MSI GX70 laptop should compare BF4 in mantle and dx
2.5~3.5GHz Richland APU + 7870@900MHz
This laptop cries for mantle.

What is the reasoning for a 1 month Thief delay?

Surely that's a rhetorical question.

They found that 2 computers operating in close proximity to each other both running Mantle but playing 2 different games opened a rift in the space/time continuum. Aparently the rift is still drifting around somewhere. As you can imagine, it's a real concern. We couldn't let that keep happening, so they delayed it ~3wks. /sarc

Do you have any data to back that up?

Are there even any GCN 1.1 cards available for notebooks? The last test I saw PCPer I think it was said mantle was not still working for 260x range cards. And all the notebook apus would not work because there is not yet a kaveri apu for mobile.

PCper also said its not working on HD 7K series cards. obviously they are wrong 😀

We'll have to see.. but pick from these:

1. EA finally learnt their lesson... (LOL SIF!)

2. Its utterly broken, not buggy, but broken and not even close to ready.

EA ships buggy stuff and polish it later via patches. But I haven't seen them ship completely broken stuff before.

Wonder how a gtx780 stands up to a 290 when Mantle is enabled? For most games a 770 to a 290 or gtx780 would be a small upgrade but for BF4 i assume a 290 with Mantle is gonna have some major boost.

At low settings for high fps/120hz gaming my 7970 at 1050mhz had over 50fps higher minimums than my gtx780 at 1176mhz. I had a frame cap at 120 so I don't know exactly how much faster. Mantle never dropped below 120fps.

Mantle is ideal for competitive/120hz gamers going for the highest possible framerates.

I play with no eyecandy at all, low settings, no AA. gtx780 on the same processor still sees minimums in the 70's, but the 7970 in mantle stayed pegged at 120fps.

It's ideal for any FPS gamer since it boosts minimum frame rate massively by removing CPU chokes (which are often the cause of fps dips in shooters).

Its something we didn't talk about much in the Mantle thread since we all assumed the boost would be low ~10% for shooter games which are for the most part, GPU limited outside of extreme events that chokes the CPU. So in fact, i think its even more beneficial than previously credited.

Wow,that is pretty impressive.I typically aim for a 60+fps experience so most likely when i jump into BF4 when it is more stable i may jump on a 290 then.Possibly all ultra without msaa and hold 60+?🙂

I run my 770 in BF3 with high settings,no motion blur and my cpu ends up being the bottleneck but i hold 60+ in nearly all maps.Seems Mantle just makes frostbite 2.0 just look so dated.🙁

This was done on a 4.8Ghz Sandy Bridge i7 and R9 290 xFire x2

Ultra preset @ 1080P

DirectX: 87 FPS

Mantle: 148 FPS

That bottom pic still looks washed out to me, which is why I used Mantle all of once.

Your top pic shows such low GPU usage, I think it speaks more to the game than the API at this point.

It looks like you are showing a scene where there is nothing for the GPU to render. People buy high-end cards (particularly multiple) to use them.

My experience is the same as the OP's. My FPS on some maps has doubled, because I was heavily CPU bound.

As for being washed out, the first Mantle patch it was, and fog was bad. But that has been fixed as far as I can tell. I have no visibility issues. I did adjust the gamma a bit though for Mantle.

EDIT: I use Windows 7 Pro

Man, results are awesome. Disclose windows version to us you two...

290xfire @ 1080p isn't really as noteworthy as the first example.

Check cinebench scores for the two processors and check firestrike score for the two graphic cards.

There are multiple spots which look less detailed on the Mantle version. I am able to see them even with the low-res SS post.

Any chance you could grab a sreenie from the same spot, same settings with your 770 for comparison?

I'm referring to those last two pics...you can see console-ized/whitewashed examples. Here are a couple spots that jump out at me from those screenies:
