This isn't a no name band, but Im sure not alot of non-musicians have heard of them.

Most people have heard of dream theater, and their famous drummer, Mike Portnoy. For the past 12 years he has swept the "best of progressive drumming" award in Modern Drummer, the most widely read percussion magazine in the world. For the first time in 12 years, another guy has one, and he is the drummer from Porcupine Tree. Having heard that, I checked them out, and I have been in absolute amazement at the quality, maturity, tastefulness, elegance, and sure beauty of this music..

id recommend "arriving somewhere" as a first listen, and if you have a few bucks to spend, go buy "fear of a blank planet" at best buy. The song "way out of here" has the best chorus I've ever heard.

They are a bit boring to me, but I recognize a good band when I see them, and Porcupine Tree are great, just too soft for my taste 🙂

same here. quality stuff, but i can only listen to their heavier, less meandering tunes because i get bored.

just bought three of their cd's? right on. I had only purchased their "fear of a blank planet" until today, when I picked up two others at Best Buy.

I could understand non-musicians being a harder sell on these guys.. Do you play something?

No but I really love all types of music and discovering new bands.

I listened to all of their songs on their myspace page and 5-6 tracks from each of their last 3 albums on iTunes and liked them all. I really liked the variety within each song.

How did you hear of them?

I've known about them for a while, but I guess w/e little I was exposed to didnt grab my attention.

I'm a big fan of Dream Theater and OSI. OSI is kind of a side project from Dream Theater, with DT's former and first keyboardist and their current drummer Mike Portnoy.

OSI to me is the smartest, most elegant rock and roll band on the planet right now. The music is great and the scope of it all is genius. they almost know toooo much about music and its influence on the mind.. Its actually a direct reference to the OSI model and communications, and its all about people and relationships paralleled with how computers work together. kinda neat actually.

Anyways, the singer from Porcupine Tree does guest vocals on a couple of OSI songs, including "shutdown" which is on one of OSI's myspace pages. Thats how I originall heard of them.

Back to dream theater.. Mike Portnoy, DT's drummer, has been voted the best progressive rock drummer in the world by Modern Drummer 12 years in a row, and was finally bested by somebody, and thats the drummer for Porcupine Tree. So I decided to take another look after hearing that, and have been floored by the quality and maturity of the music.

You are right, the songs are so shifty, that if you were to guage any song by a 1 minute sample you are really making a mistake..

 
PT kicks arse. I have In Absentia and Deadwing on CD as well as DVD-A.

I didn't buy their new DVD because I remember not liking how it was edited. PT had released a clip of it early on. It seemed like it was edited by a caffeine induced 20 year old that watches too much MTV.

If you're starting out with PT, then do pick up In Absentia and Deadwing.

PT seems to be one of those bands that when you find it, you think nobody knows about it, then you realize they have sold out every US show they play... its an underground thing i guess...

I started with Fear of a Blank Planet, which is the new one. I swear the chorus of "way out of here" is the best passage of music ever. Just today I bought In Absentia and Deadwing.. Still digesting.

nah. i have Deadwing and I've listened to In Absentia. tried to get into Porcupine Tree when I was on an Opeth kick (they're a tightly allied band, and every Opeth thread I read also mentioned Porcupine Tree), but they didn't stick. proggy stuff is hit or miss for me. although i appreciate the musicianship, i find most prog to by self-indulgent, verging on boring.

however, i'm hugely into bands that are considered prog, but they've got a unique/new spin on the genre (i.e. they don't as obviously descend from Yes/King Crimson/Rush as Dream Theater, Opeth, PT, etc):

Lol, about the same as me again... I really like Opeth, though its rare to be in "Opeth mood" (because I really have to be in Opeth mood to listen to them), and its one of those times everyone recomends another band as being similar and.. it just doesnt do anything for me

The melodies dont catch, no passage blows me out of my chair, it just seems to lack something...

Porcupine Tree is Amazing. I love their music. I am not a musician but I have about a dozen PT albums as well as a few bootlegs. I got into prog mostly from Opeth's lighter music over the last 6 or 7 years. Deadwing is probably my favorite PT album, but honestly, I like all of their stuff, even their older "Pink Floyd wanna be" type stuff.

That said, you may also be interested in checking out the Polish prog band Riverside. Their CD "Out Of Myself" is fantastic. Second Life Syndrome is quite interesting as well, though IMO it isn't quite as good. It's a bit heavier and faster than Porcupine Tree, but it's still very listenable for anybody who isn't into death metal.

Also, you've probably heard Ayreon if you know Porcupine Tree, but they are absolutely magnificent. give a listen to "The Human Equation" or maybe "Universal Migrator" or if you want something a bit heavier, listen to "Star One."

Whilst Opeth are my favorite band by several orders of magnitude, Ayreon (well, any of Arjen Anthony Lucassen's projects really) are within my top 5. Right up there with Iron Maiden and Porcupine Tree 🙂

Other than the person who turned me on to them, I've never met anyone who has heard of Dream Theater. Well, I shook James LaBrie's hand, and I guess he's heard of them.
 
Yes, PT does indeed rock. Was listening to In Absentia and The Sky Moves Sideways last night. Both are great albums.

Anyway, I had seen this thread when it was first posted, but it was the second thread posted about PT recently so I didn't reply (I did reply to the first one).

Yes, PT is awesome, and I really like the fact that Steven Wilson is always experimenting and no two albums sound the same (some songs do, though). I have damn near everything they have released and the newer albums are definitely getting heavier and less "spacey". If you are a fan of Pink Floyd then you'll like their older albums. If you are a fan of DT or Opeth you'll like their newer albums (though there is still a PF sound in some songs). I like them all. 🙂
