An alternative to the IPOD....

Cuda1447

Im looking for a mass storage mp3 player similar to an IPOD. Preferably something with a wireless fm modulator so it can be used in a car without any major hookups.

Anyone have any suggestions to an alternative?

Just do a search for iPod, even thread has an alternative opinion with features listed - or even easier - search for Gurck's posts - every other one is in an iPod thread 😀

There isn't one...

However, you could go with a Creative Zen or something Creative that plays MP3's...

There's the dell DJ, but that only has 20 gb of space, with no option of more space...

Then there's Archos MP3 players, but I'd stay the hell away from them

Personally, I'd just go with the iPod, that's all...

The wireless FM module is pretty universal I believe. As long as it has spdif out then it will work.

I originally had a 10 gig ipod, upgraded to a twenty gig Ipod, which got stolen... I replaced it with a 30 gig Creative Zen Xtra about.

My price point is under $200 and the Zen had nice storage for that price.
It is UGLY AS SIN though.
If you want sleek and hip, it's not the Zen.
I personally think the audio out is better on the zen than it was on my Ipod 2nd and 3rd gen. Also I like the versatility of the menus though not as sleek as the Ipod.

By the way OMGWTFGOOGLE!!KL!)!{)(!)!*(Y^!*&!&%

I don't need anything with a huge amount of storage capacity. 20gb's is more then enough, and is kinda what Im shooting for.

Another thing I'd like it to be able to do is be used for running or sports. If Im not mistaken the Ipod makes an arm strap thingy that you can use while running or something like that. Do any of the others have those?

The arm strap is for the iPod Mini, not the regular one.

I wouldn't jog with any hard drive player, pick up the cheapest 128mb flash player you can find for that. Should leave you plenty of cash to buy a good hdd-based player - or an ipod.

Yeah, but you can get the case for the iPod that is damn nice...

Plus you can get the remote with the iPod that makes changing songs so damn nice while running or biking or working out.

I personally wouldn't go with an iPOD. Not now anyway. I don't own one, but my sister called me just last week about a problem with hers. She is in the Navy and my grandparents bought a brand new iPOD a few months ago before she got shipped up to a new base. Well, she calls me complaing that it keeps locking-up and asking if I have heard of any such issues. I did a quick search on the internet and found this:

ipodlounge.com thread #1
ipodlounge.com thread #2
ipodlounge.com thread #3
ipodlounge.com thread #4

etc, etc, etc.... Just do a search for "freezing" or "lock" and you will find more threads.

Some of these people have been through 4 or 5 iPODs with the same lock-up issues and it is exactly the issue my sister has now after about 6 months of use. The problem has also apparently been around through several generations of the iPOD and has actually gotten worse in the later generations.

Functionality as a plug & play hard drive is a big deal to me, I don't really look too hard at players without the capability. I've been eyeballing the iaudio m3 40gb, ~$335 at Newegg and very polished all-around.

received mines last week. i like it a lot. my only gripe is that i wish the headphone cord was longer (but that can easily be remedied with a extension cord from radio shack or something). but other than that, sound is good, simple to use, and plug and play hard drive worked perfectly. i just use syncback to have it add new files to my collection. and the firmware support and such done by iaudio has thus far impressed me. in fact, the day i received the player, a new firmware came out that very day.

not to mention, i placed my order late tuesday night with newegg, and it was fedex'd to me and showed up at my door on thursday afternoon. didnt even do overnight or 2-day or anything, just regular super saver shipping.

Hey dude, get a neuros, thats what I use, it has it all built in, check the link in my sig for the one Im selling, it has it all built in

I got the 15GB Dell DJ and have been pretty pleased with it. I don't know how well it would do running or anything like that, but I walk on the treadmill with mine and don't have a problem.

I just got my iriver H320... its a good player (this is my first mp3 player so its a bit different than I am used to)
