all in all a good deal, but what about this Celeron chip...it says on the other models that they are special energy saving chips, but this one doesn't.

I'm guessing because it's not a "Low Voltage Intel® Celeron" it eats up battery power faster.

Hehe I do the same with about 25% of the stuff I buy from Hot Deals. Fortunately I have a co-worker who desperately wants a laptop and is saving up for one. She should have enough money within a few months. Wish I could see one of these in person before buying it.

I am scared of refurbished anything..
I have gotten some refurbished items over the internet, and
have had to return 2 out of 3 of them..
The probs seem to creep back up, or have never been fixed from before..

Good luck with this one tho..
I would have gotten it, but I need the serial/parallel ports, I sync the unit to a police scanner that needs serial connections to upload/download data into it.

I'll answer some questions that have been posed recently:

1) USB Printer Adapters exist. Belkin makes one, as well as other companies. I think they are about $30.

2) Belkin also makes a USB Direct Connect Cable. This Fujitsu comes with Laplink 2000 (full version), which makes transferring files over a direct connection very easy.

3) I believe there are sites on the net with hacks for WinDVD 2000, allowing Multi-Region Capability.

4) I noticed that this unit has a larger HD than the Wal-Mart HP Notebook. One whole Gig more. Wow. heh heh

5) Yes, this unit does do 32-Bit True Color, courtesy of the ATI Video Card w/4 Megs of it's own Video RAM (Oh how I hate computers with "shared" video memory.

6) I have no evidence that this is a Low Volage Celeron, but I have to say that this thing runs very cool. As I had said the fan rarely comes on, and when it does, it's quiet. It would seem to me that it would run hot and the fan would be blowing all of the time if it wasn't?

Heh heh. I sell everything I get bored with too. And I get bored a LOT! I had my ePod for exactly one week before it was sold on eSlay.

I ordered mine Wednesday night, and I will have it when I get home from school. I tried looking for articles on installing linux on this laptop, but couldn't find anything on the i-series. Hope it will go, but won't be crushed if it doesn't.

Incase I need to connect to other ppl's computer for some quick transfers.
I wonder if direct cable connection in windows works using USB connections?

If you wish to transfer files via USB-to-USB connections
between two separate computers, there are some detailed
posts in this thread about it and how.

That above thread is getting old, so it may die soon unless
someone posts in it.

I'm still debating with myself whether or not these lower-priced notebooks are signalling a trend for notebook prices to drop just like desktop prices used to be high until a 3-month period where most brands started nosediving way way down in price. Is this happening with notebooks (should I wait a little bit yet) or are these HP & Fujitsu notebooks just isolated blow-out pricing cases?

It came today! I think it's very cool, but I don't know a thing about laptops, so my opinion doesn't count for much. It's very sleek. The DVD drive sound like a jet engine on spin-up, but begins to quiet down after a little bit. The only "different" thing that I could tell was that: There was a slight blemish on the top of the laptop, but not that noticeable; there was some sticky residue on the bottom, where, I presume, a sticker (shock!!) was stuck. Seems very cool.

Any suggestions on where to get:

NIC
128MB SODIMM
S-Video cable
cheap DVD's (x-men, matrix; usual first-time owner dvd's)

I bought this FMI NIC from CompUSA (their brand)for $19.99:

FMI PCMCIA Net Card

I use it with my Fujitsu and DSL. The specs are vague, but I'm assuming that it is 16-Bit. It is only 10Mbps, but honestly I haven't noticed any decrease in speed/quality compared to my desktop pc since I use DSL (100Mbps is pointless for DSL/Cable).

The interesting thing about this card is it comes in two versions, one with a dongle (blech!), and one with the rj45 jack built in to the card (not to be confused with an X-Jack). I of course bought the latter, and have been thoroughly pleased with it. Both have the same SKU and UPC, so you need to look at the picture on the box. Don't buy the dongle one, as those are more likely to break. :)

i see mentions that it is good but does not compare to the offering of the hp from walmart a few weeks back. Why is this the case? I see a few issues all of which make it feel like a wash to me.

hp is new instead of a refurb.
fujitsu is a better brand
fujitsu has bigger hd
fujitsu has a better battery li-ion is better than nimh
hp can have more ram?

thats about it.

i want this; but callign it 749$ is sorta bullcrap since it will be 830$ after being attacked by tax and shipping. I guess i'll wait for dell to give us another coupon and get a dvd dell for about 1k$. weren't some people swinging low end dell's with dvd under 1000$ with ebates and microsoft coupon and liek a 100$ off thingy? about novemberish?
