No, I don't remember where I got that video. The guy in the video was lucky, he didn't mash the pedal too hard, and the engine didn't grenade.

The limiter can't limit revs if you downshift.
 
He prolly missed 4th and kept slamming into gear without first releasing the clutch. It happened to me when I was first learning how to drive stick.

Actually a simple rev limiter could save all that trouble... some cars have it. As to why the RSX and Celica doesn't i don't know... especially since they're high revving cars. 😕

The RSX does have a rev limiter, but it only keeps you from over-revving the engine if you are accelerating. Downshifting into a gear is pure mechanical physics, and if you drop it into 2nd at 100 mph, nothing can save you.
 
Like Vic said, the RSX does have a rev-limiter, but no rev-limiter will save your engine if you misshift at redline.

A rev limiter will not save you from mechanical spin when you are downshifting. When you downshift, the engine must turn a higher rpm to maintain the same speed, the rev limiter is moot in that circumstance.

Honda gave the RSX-S a very close-ratio, very short-throw 6 speed. Its a great gearbox, but definitely not one to be used by hot-headed, novice drivers. For some reason, all the stories about blown engines seem to start, "I just graduated from high school and i pulled up next to this xxxx at the stoplight and..."
 
That video of the RSX mis shifting has been out forever... he was a member at ClubRSX.com, but that video came out after the car was first introduced. No damage came to his car, beleive it or not.

Rev limiters make no difference on an accidental downshift, at that point, the wheels are driving the motor rather than the motor revving itself up. Cutting fuel/spark won't stop the rotating assembly from spinning too fast.

Unless you have an electronic shifter like those F1-style or manumatics/tiptronic shifters.
 
I don't know about the RSX-S, but I know the CL-S 6-speed will lock you out of first gear when you are going a certain speed. It doesn't prevent 1st gear shifts, but it makes it very difficult to shift into first (a lot of resistance), so a person would know that they're accidently shifting into first. I don't know if this same kindof protection exists in 2nd gear.

The question is, if he's in third and gunning it, he needs to let off the gas and apply the clutch (well, assuming he's not an idiot, which he very well might be), then shift into 2nd ... when he shifts into 2nd, as he lets go of the clutch he should realize that its in 2nd and be able to re-apply the clutch real quick and shift back into 3rd or 4th... Its obvious that this guy doesn't have a lot of experience with driving, or he was so "into" racing or whatever he was doing (eating pizza?), that he didn't notice his engine blowing up until it was too late.

That's easy to believe... he didn't rev it that high, and hondas do take lots of revving quite well. That definitely didn't sound like 13+k 😉

I've redlined the snot out of a civic for a while.. and although you can kill any car that way, doing that once in a while to a honda doesn't hurt it too much. 😛

I've redlined the snot out of a civic for a while.. and although you can kill any car that way, doing that once in a while to a honda doesn't hurt it too much. 😛

Oh, I know. I was just saying - about the video - it's not hard to believe at all that his engine is still OK. It won't be ok for long if he keeps driving that way though. 😉

Obviously the 13k guy is finished. lol

His engine doesnt work anymore, but on the plus side, he now has one heck of a paperweight
 
In the video (which yes, I know it's not the same event), the driver shifted at almost exactly 8,000 rpm in 3rd or just about 90 mph. Shifting down into 2nd, that means he sent the engine to ~11,232 rpm.

"Oh sh!t" indeed. What saved him, it seems, is that he put the clutch back in right away.
 
In the other thread started today about this guy, it was mentioned he was downshifting from 5->4, but instead went 5->2....

This would make it possible for him to go up to 13,000rpm...
