Trains still exist? And people still ride in them?
Yes. And they could be part of our future as well. Just ask Elon Musk. In fact, on that subject, he's a Musk ask!

As for the present, anecdotally, I know at least two folks who've embarked on long train rides this past year. One, the brother of a friend, we met up with in Grand Junction, AR (from the east coast) after we'd been in Sedona, for road travels throughout Arizona, Colorado and Utah and such. He chose the train because he's a staunch conservationist and doing so had a smaller carbon footprint than traveling by car or jet would have had.

The other friend traveled across Canada on the Trans Canadian Railway for the breath-taking scenery. Both enjoyed train cars with observation decks, and allowed as how their fellow passengers weren't weird, annoying, scary or boring at all!

Trains! A different experience than the existential dismay (and possible communicative diseases) of a Greyhound bus! ;)

You sure don't save money though. The fares are most definitely not cheap.

But back on topic. Though incidents like these are tragic and distressing, it does seem like train travel is statistically safer than automobile travel: But statistically speaking, trains are actually a very safe way to travel -- much safer than driving.

Nobody knows exactly what the status is and the state police won't comment until they make contact with Amtrak's officials.

83 people total on the train. Unknown on the ground. They are reporting 77 people in total transported to hospital.

I hope that this doesn't turn out to be sabotage.
AP is reporting that the train was alleged to be over the speed limit when this happened. Also notice that the end of the train is still on the tracks after it slowed down so I would imagine that curve speed limit will be downgraded.

There's so many similarities to the sinking of the Titanic that it's spooky.

My condolences go out to the families of the ones that passed on from this tragic accident.

The official who was briefed on the investigation also says preliminary signs indicate the Amtrak train may have struck something on the track before going off the track

seems it may be a possibility.

Exactly. If it was only 3mph over, that SHOULD be within the safety factor.

Easily. Speed limit safety factors are huge. It's also important to realize that the train & track were tested extensively before customers were allowed on board. That's very much SOP for passenger rail. It was my business for over 20 years.

We'll have to wait for facts before coming to any concrete conclusions on the causation for this terrible accident. I'm surprised that nobody has said the usual suspect phrase, you know T's & P's..

Inaugural trip for both. Speed taking precedence over safety. Significant loss of life. Carelessness of the operators. Probable need of management to break some kind of speed record and justify the expense of the operation to name few.

That's a whole lot of assumption there, you know what they say about assumption :).

No way to actually KNOW any of this...YET.

I'm in the area...sort of, (about 50 miles away) and this is the only thing on the local stations right now. Lots of speculation...no real concrete facts except New train, new tracks/route. The mayor of Lakewood (small town this passes through) has been warning that there would be a fatal accident sooner or later...but from what I've seen, that's more because the train passes through his town at speeds up to 80 mph.

NTSB is sending 20 investigators to the scene so we'll have to wait for them to pick through it before we know for sure what happened today.
