Amount of Transmission Fluid

I realize this isn't really the right forum for this question, but maybe you guys can help. I have a 1999 Honda Accord(4 cy. automatic transmission). The guys at the tranny shop fixed my differential(took the whole trans-axel apart in the process), and they also drained and refilled the transmission fluid. I was charged for 10 quarts of transmission fluid. I thought the capacity was only like 3-4 quarts? I tried google and I tried looking at my manual but I can't find how much fluid it takes... can anyone help? Does 10 quarts seem unreasonable to anyone else?

10 sounds about right. When I had my transmission rebuilt, they put in 14 quarts, but it was a bigger transmission. The torque converter holds a lot of fluid.

i think it's 9 quarts for a flush. so 10 doesnt sound unreasonable.

how much is a transmmission flush? It is worth it? I was told at my last oil change that the cherry red color is turning brown. Car has ~100000 and it has never been flushed

The vehicles manual should have this information. My subaru does and so does my Civic.

flushing for older car are bad..

your best bet.. drain and fill for like the next few days.. drain 3 qt, fill with fresh, drive around some more.. wait 2 days to let the fresh circulate and drain and fill again.. i would do it for 3-4 times...

I bought 4 or 5 quarts of auto transmission fluid for my Dad's 99 accord from the dealer. The total was under $25. 10 quarts doesn't sound right. Call your local Honda Dealer parts department and ask them.

IT is perfectly reasonable when you completely disassemble the transmission. If you just change fluid and filter, you'll only get 3-5 quarts out.

all trannys will need to be flushed eventually, no matter what age. if they pull it apart and put it back together, then flushing is not out of the question.

Simple. Just call up your local Honda dealership ask for the Service Department and ask them. Act like your bringing it in though so they are interested in helping you.

Yep. The tranny/torque convertor hold more fluid than usually comes out with just dropping the pan.

There is the amount when you do a drain a file, which is 3 quarts on a honda. But when you take the whole trans apart then you have to fill it ALL up so 10 does not sound out of the ball park.
Just make sure they used Mobil1 or the Honda dealer trans fluid. A lot of time if you use reg. dexron it will cause problems. That is why i always use Mobil1 as it does nto cost that much more but will keep the Honda trans shifting fine.

Thanks! They assured me they used Honda trans fluid. Also, I guess I didn't realize taking it apart would require that much more fluid. I guess I was wrong... that's a first
