Amongst female pop & country singers, who has the nicest voice that you've ever heard?

I had to include country because the voices in that genre are so much richer that in other pop genres. Folk music could also be included. Anyway, there is no doubt in my mind that the answer is

Karen Carpenter!

No voice was richer or more soothing.

I enjoy listening to Mindy McCready's 3rd CD (I'm Not So Tough), & Shania's second (The Woman In Me). Those two are about as good as they get when I want to enjoy a nice female voice.

Denis, I have to agree with you. I've never heard anyone smoother or richer than Karen Carpenter. She had a really lovely, full voice - even if it's "square", I still break out one of the old Carpenters' albums from time to time.

E! re-broadcast the True Hollywood Story they did on her a week or so ago. It was so sad - when she was alive, I was too young to have any clue what was going on with her, but I do have a specific memory of seeing her doing a television show and thinking she looked sick.

Haven't thought hard about this but I agree that I like Karen Carpenter's voice a lot. My favorite performance is a Christmas song:

"Chestnuts roasting on an open fire, Jack Frost nipping at your nose".

Very smooth and soothing voice. Tranquility.

How about non-singers? I'm completely entranced by Mrs. Field's (of Mrs. Field's Cookies fame) voice. I don't know if she has any singing talent, but her voice is music to my ears. To bad I've only heard it once, when she was on Mark &amp; Brian's morning show many years ago.
