If the people really are Amish, why did they agree to live in NY and be on TV? Doesn't that go against what they believe or something?
When Amish get around the age of 17 they can choose to go on rumspringa. During this time they are allowed to leave the amish lifestyle and experience a non-Amish lifestyle for as long as they want. During this time they are no longer restricted to Amish clothing and rules (no makeup...etc). At anytime they can go back to the Amish lifestyle and get baptized and stay with the church for the rest of their life, or they can leave the amish church all together.
I thought the show was interesting in a documentry sort of way. The amish kids havent experienced many things the city kids take for granted like the beach or the large variety of food available to them.
I didn't know that. That's probably the most open-minded thing I've ever heard come out of a religious community.
 for the Amish.
yup, i live like 20 minutes away from what i believe is the largest amish area in the country. I went down to cancun with my dad for a business trip and one of the people who went was amish. dressed totally normal, and was trashed 24x7. i dunno how you could ever go back after that. but yea, the amish can have a phone in their barn, but not their house. they can use electricity as long as it is not at their house etc. its more open than ppl think.
