If someone were a Hitler worshiping nazi they would know how to draw a swastika. When you see a screwed up one like this is is usually a guy like lost in the http who is trying to cause trouble.

If I were the editor of any kind of publication that is intended for anyone other than a scientist, I would treat data as singular. But back to the point, I have a tendency to think folks who care to be hyper-correct about this are likely to show that attention to detail elsewhere. Probably a good thing for answering the question at issue.

FBI stats report thousands of hate crimes every year, over 7,000 in 2018 alone. You could add a zero to the number of incidents on your list and it would still be statistically insignificant. You can't prove that "false hate crimes are on the rise" with a pile of anecdotes. Any more than you can prove the converse with the same method.
