I've been a little down lately, but Forbes just perked me up. Michigan is faring better this year. Detroit was #1 last year. We'll gladly pass the baton to Stockton, CA.

The most miserable cities are;

Stockton, CA
Memphis, TN
Chicago, IL
Cleveland, OH
Modesto, CA
Flint, MI
Detroit, MI
Buffalo, N.Y.
Miami, FL
St. Louis, MO

http://www.forbes.com/2009/02/..._miserable_cities.html

In Illinois, 385 public officials have been convicted of crimes over the past decade. That's a jaw-dropping number.

That is good. Los Angeles didn't make the list.

Chicago weather is nice, except in the summer. Lots of snow!
That said, the commutes are hellish and I hate the traffic. And in the city, there is nowhere to park.

I lived in Chicago for a year and it's a fabulous city, one of the only great cities in the midwest. If the weather weren't so atrocious I would totally consider moving there.

Oakland should definitely be on the list though.

No love for Jackson, MS or New Orleans, LA?

I lived in Jackson for a while, parts of it are scary as hell. The nightly news was like an action movie in the same league as Shoot 'Em Up.

I bet the majority of those cities vote democratic. :)

Memphis does. And we've had the same loser Mayor for years who hasn't done one damn thing to make this city any better. He's still in office because he's black. I hate to say it like that, but the truth hurts.

Hah. King Willy sucks but it's so funny because he just does whatever he wants and no one cares.

Luckily we put term limits in place now and this will be his last term. Unfortunately, the county mayor will probably take his place. I personally like the Memphis area. I live in the burbs though (Arlington).

I like Chicago compared to Detroit. Detroit is amazingly depressing to even visit. I tried to go downtown on the freeway, and the freeway just ended. It was barricaded, but there was no construction. Honestly, I felt like a hoard of zombies was going to overrun my car.

Detroit is where the weak are killed and eaten.

IMO Green Bay and Madison are nice cities. I actually kinda like Milwaukee better than Chicago mostly due to parking/traffic differences....

Chicago doesn't belong on that list. After the huge effort chicago put fowarth to clean up the city, it is actually a very clean city and I loved living there. Rather enjoyable city.... plus the pizza!!!!

ROFLWaffles! One of me best mates said a Iraqi cab driver recently told him he felt safer in Baghdad (2005) than he does in Detroit.

You could fix that if you'd put a casino in your pyramid like they did in Vegas.....instead of a bunch of canadian wannabe basketball players.

I'm surprised Modesto ranked lower than Fresno though I'm not surprised about Stockton. That place is only good for one thing, gassing up before you go skiing on the Delta.

Also, Buffalo should not be on the list. A lot of people like snow and there is no way you can live in Buffalo without enjoying it. Just because it is cold and snowy doesn't mean that it is miserable.

Isn't buffalo the lonely hearts capital of the US? No one getting laid there.

Sounds like a more legit gripe then "basketball team stinks"
Your mom is, and I should know because I just got back.

Chicago was the murder capital of the US for 2008. That makes it a prime candidate IMHO.

I don't know. People may still take the 40 minute drive south to Tunica to have more and better selections. I was against the Grizz coming here. They talked for years about getting an NFL team, but said the city couldn't afford to go to 8 home games a year. Then they did a 180 and we're now supposed to be able to afford 41 NBA home games a year. The FedEx Forum is very nice, but the Pyramid is something we're still paying for. Regardless, our problem is bad government. The result has been the wealthy heading east.

:laugh:Detroit native here. I went back recently for a cousins wedding, and yeah it still has a bombed out feel to it that I remember from childhood. Your last sentence is only too true. The motto of the Detroit Bujinkan is We eat the weak.

Another vote for Baltimore needing some representation btw!

The more I think about this list, the more I call shens. After all, a the misery scale that leaves off ANY city in New Jersey? Places like Camden make East St. Louis look like Beverly Hills.

No surprise, Stockton and Modesto are both dumps. Modesto is just more rural.

Sez the guy from Sacramento...Every bit as dumpy...just MUCH bigger...with a larger "bad neighborhood," like ALL of south Sacramento...
