The only American part of the America's Cup these days is the money.

Congratulations on having more money than a country with a hundredth of your population.

Over the past couple of cups, it was reckoned that Larry Ellison put close to a billion dollars in the team. Granted some of it was for advertising and indirect sponsorship but I don't think you're making a convincing argument.

Because, apparently, it is a matter of national importance.

And because a defense would be really good for tourism. This tenuous grasp is all the NZ government needs to get involved.

I don't think NZ's gov't thought the grasp was tenuous at all, esp. considering NZ has won the Cup before.

I'd think NZ thought, and rightly so, that the odds of them regaining possession of the Cup was at least a 50/50 proposition.
