Well, the name America came from the first man to draw a map of America, an Italian named Amerigo Vespucci. So I propose we change our name to the United States of Vespuccia, and we can all be known as Vespuccians.

So you don't want to be identified as an American, but you don't want us United Vespuccians to identify ourselves as American?

No, but I think it should be Amerigo to be precise... you could all be Amerigoons then :D

North America is a continent. South America is a continent. America is a country which happens to be made up of 50 states that are united to make the country. America's citizens are called American.

Canada is a country. They could have named it the United Provinces of Canada but they would still be called Canadian.

Micronesia is a country. It is made up of Federated states. The Federated States of Micronesia's citizens are called Micronesians.

A person is only American if they are a citizen of the United States of America.

Using the term Americans to refer to the citizens of the USA might be a little incorrect?

What do you think?

I am trying to think of this term.. a term used to described people who thinks their country is superior to other countries, but cannot narrow it down right his minute.

I think the United States of America is incorrect and should be corrected and changed to United States of North America. USNA. ;)

There is no state in South America.
Take that biatches!!

America is singular, implying it's only in one of the two.

That that! ;)

Broon is right. Just because it's a coincedence that the country happens to also have part of the name of the continent doesn't mean we have to omit it altogether, just to appease other countries in the continent. Mexicans and Canadians likely wouldn't call themselves American, just as a French person would rather be refered to as French than European.

Well first of all to everybody, nobody was asking how it works today but how it should work in their opinion so dont go giving history lessons on how the nations are set up. The topic was mainly to discuss on how you think it should be not how it is right now.

I've always assumed anyone who called themselves American came from the US... Not so far a leap in logic...

Seems like a fairly poor discussion, if you ask me, as it seems to just be used to generally incite people..

I said that because that's how I think it should work.

Also if you want to hyphenate your "nationality" (African-American, Canadian-American, Latin-American, etc...) you must be born in that country and become an American citizen. So there is no such thing as African-America or Latin-American. You could be Nigerian-American or Chiliean-American though. If you were born an American citizen, then you are American.

On top of that, to answer the OPs question, everyone in N./S. America is an American. So when someone from the US says "I'm American" they are correct. It's all the other countries in the Americas that don't want to associate themselves with the term who have the problem, THEY ARE AMERICANS TOO!!!

Take that, HAHAHAHA!!!

i guess in a sense, that is correct, everybody in the americas are americans. It is how they want to be refered as that is what gets used. Maybe its the fact that we took up on that name first so nobody else can be called americans.

Why are you so gung-ho to change it? There's nothing wrong with it. With the exception of some cry-baby citizens of some third-world country, the entire globe calls us Americans.

No, they're not. North America and South America are distinct. There is no America continent or country. You are placing the term "American" on the wrong step of the ladder.

You are first a North American or a South American, then depending on your country you can be classified more specifically, then by state/province, then by locality.

There are two heirarchies, one starting with North America as a parent, one as South America. The term "American" refers to the classification given to those in the country United States of America.

Just MHO.
