Americans, your thoughts...people who live here and can't speak english

Vapor, I am not trying to disrespect you. I was just pointing out that learning english no matter how difficult it is leads to less confusion and problems with people communicating.

I know that people aren't just gonna get over and be able to speak english just like that. That's foolish. But I do believe that a person should at least try to learn the language.
 
If I were to move to a foreign country, I'd certainly make sure that I learned the language. It would be MY responsibility to do so.

At least they had the balls to face such a challenge.


On the other hand, I have to agree that if your job requires that you interact with other people, then you should definitely be able to understand English or whatever the language is.
Don't blame these employees, blame the companies who gave them those positions.

EmperorNero and VAP0R- Nowhere in my posts have I called immigrants stupid. Nor do I think they are lazy. I do think that some REFUSE to learn English or do not feel a pressing need to learn. Why? Because they can exist in their own culture with their own language. Then when they have to use English they cannot. Is that really that bad? Not really. Is it frustrating? Yep. Does it mean I am a racist? I guess in your eyes I am. Let me go get my Klan hat and white sheet. Can I come burn a cross in your yard?

Assumptions are the mother of all Fsckups.

I also understand how you feel, I would do the same if someone talked like that to my mother( who speaks a bad english ).
 
and there are the little problems, we havent addressed, such as everytime I go to mcdonalds, I get someone who barely speaks english, I order a meal for my family, and get exactly the opposite of what I ordered. Why cant they put these people in the back, to cook? Its not like its a decline in pay, it just makes sense...

clerk hands me my #3 with root beer.

not a big deal, but it has actually kept me from patronizing these
restaurants where I know this will happen. (Hillsboro McDonald's havent seen me in over a year)





 
My opinion is summed up nicely by these words which are taken from a sign I saw hanging over the customer service counter in a place of business:

Welcome to America! NOW SPEAK ENGLISH!!!!

nsf4, that seems to be a recurring theme in your arguments: that immigrants are not even bothering to learn (but if that wasn't what you meant, it does sound like it). a lot of people are trying to learn english...and are in the process of learning when people like that dumbass grocery bagger (in vapor's story) who do not even bother to acknowledge the fact that they are trying and are still learning. secondly, some people simply can't learn: how much time can you devote to spend on learning english when you have kids you have to take care of by working 2 low paying jobs.

Why don't you step back and look at the big picture? When I said that, I aimed that at everyone who was stereotyping...so I guess I should apologize for thinking you were smart enough to realize that?

again, just step back and look at things instead of just seeing through that narrow tube you use to look at the world. vapor isn't advocating violence, the point of his story is to show the bigotry and prejudice that still exists and how he has enough pride to stick those flagrant insults up those people's ass.


TO THE BOARD AS A WHOLE, NOT JUST MILLIENIUM (happy, millenium? or was that still not clear enough?), I'm doing successfully in school (all except latin..but my intentions of majoring in computer science/engineering has nothing to do with latin so I didn't bother to invest my time studying it, but rather in math and science, but I digress...). I promise you I have the potentials to grow up and be a productive member of society, and I certainly will. and why? because my parents instilled a sense of responsibility and made sacrifices for me at the expense of their education. now apply my situation to others where immigrant parents are making hefty sacrifices for their kids so they can grow up to be productive members. and by how I see it, that is better than ditching their priorities of raising their kids correctly just to satisfy the narrow minded people's demand of learning english because they want to save a few cents off their weekly paycheck.


and lastly, very good story, vapor. but I'm beginning to feel it's futile to get your point across to some people. it's kinda ironic and hypocritical to see how some would use &quot;immigrants came here and are leeching off of us&quot; as their pathetic argument when the foundations of this country was built on the blood of native americans. but hey, I've accepted the facts there are people like dameon in this country...but I also do realize there are many good hearted people so just try to ignore the bigots. I'm going to take my own advice and retire for the night...need to finish homework.

Can't I win?😉 What I'm trying to say is that in order to function in this country to the fullest potential and to be able to communicate with the majority of Americans, english is a neccessity.

Is that a bit closer? 🙂

No you should apologize for personally attacking me and not knowing what the fsck you were talking about. Keep flaming me and I will respond with a personal attack. I am not nice when I become pissed off. Furthermore, my Aunt was Korean. She did not speak English when she married my Uncle and came to the U.S. She learned it fairly quickly though. Mainly because she had a reason to. Her Husband spoke English and so did all those that surrounded her. She didn't have a Korean community to relate to. My cousins spoke Korean as well when they were growing up. They learned English though.

When you can post logical arguments that are not personal attacks and unjustified, then I will really respond to your posts. Quit accusing me of being dumb and racist. You are only looking like a fool. I am trying to explain my viewpoints without becoming emotional or hate filled. Maybe you should try the same. My opinion is just as VALID as yours is. When you come to realize that people have different ideas and opinions, then maybe you can try to argue with them. If you are arrogant enough to believe that your opinions are valid, and other opinions are wrong, then you will never advance your cause. I had a nice long reply to you but IE crashed and ate it. I guess I need to go get my Klan hat out of the closet. Everyone here that argues with you MUST be a racist. That is the only way that you can have a personal justification for the rhetoric and pure BS that you spew.

Viper, I feel your pain..yet alot worse....I walk down the street and I hear Spanish music blasting from a car. I hear people talk in Spanish at school and on the streets ALL THE TIME. It's so stupid, and they call my &quot;white&quot; friends stupid Americans...pisses me off..
