Americans Think the Rich Are Smarter, But Greedier

Republicans say that the rich are hard-working job creators who are admired -- and even saluted -- by their fellow Americans. They say Americans don't want to tax success and engage in wealth spreading.

Democrats say the rich didn't make it on their own, and can be heartless and uncharitable. They say Americans want the rich to pay their fair share and want to shrink the growing wealth gap.

A new poll on wealth from Pew Research, however, reveals that this black-and-white view of the rich doesn't reflect the shades of gray with which most Americans view the rich.

The Pew poll finds that more 80 percent of self-described middle- and lower-class Americans say they admire people who get rich by working hard.

Four in ten Americans say the wealthy are more likely to be intelligent (that compares to 8 percent who say they are less likely to be intelligent).

At the same time, 55 percent say the wealthy are more greedy and 34 percent say the wealthy are less likely to be honest (compared to 12 percent who say they are more honest).

More than six in ten Americans say the GOP favors the wealthy over the middle class and poor.

The poll shows that the upper-income groups are happier, healthier and doing better financially that most Americans. About four in ten upper-class adults say they are in better shape now than they were before the recession.

That compares with about four in ten middle-class adults who say they are in worse financial shape.

I think that is partially correct.

Those that have jobs may admire the rich but those that have not been able to find decent jobs would have an otherwise negative opinion.

I think the author has a black and white view of how R's and D's view the wealthy. I really don't think anyone is saluting the wealthy simply due to their wealth. Rather, they are saluting the hard work and the success stories of what it takes to reach that point. That may or may not be true of course, but for the most part it is the entrepreneurial rags-to-riches via hard work that people salute. Never heard of anyone saluting or admiring someone born into huge wealth.

OP, you might want to put the article you are quoting from in your OP in quotes using the quote tags, otherwise it will look like people are quoting your words, and not the articles, when they reply to your OP.

The rich being smarter is a huge misconception brought about by the corporate propaganda machine. Intelligence absolutely does not equal success in America, just look at all the morons in ATPN that claim to be rich; most of them can't even spell.

It's a statistical fact that the middle class on average are smarter than the lower and I'm sure this correlation exists comparing rich to middle, though I imagine that it fairly quickly slows down.

You can see evidence of it in this thread. For example, mcowen regularly complains about his financial situation and yet is also the only person to not post his commentary in his new threads in the first post, an indication of questionable intelligence.

^^ Success doesn't = intelligence, nor does knowledge.

HEI Just becuase I make Mililions of dollers does not meen I am stoopid!

I think you mean those who demand others' material goods claim others are greedy 😵

Same thing. Someone who lusts after something is exhibiting a very unhealthy longing and desire for the something - to the point of getting stupid and saying the OTHER person is greedy for simply having what the lusting person desires so much.

Well thats fairly useless.

4/10 upper income doing better? Does that mean 6/10 aren't?

Contrast with middle income. 4/10 doing worse. Is that 6/10 are better off?

Poorly written.

i just want all the smart people to make ungodly amounts of money. that way eventually some of that money will flow down into my hands. like, $14 worth!

I think it has more to do with a bit of luck, and being "clever" over intelligent. Gates and Jobs took ideas from somebody else and marketed it better. They may have been smart, but neither of them sat there feverishly coding away in order to invent something new.

There are plenty of intellectual snobs who barely pay the mortgage. See also: your local univeristy faculty.

In keeping in tune with the topic, here's a meme idea for you:

Has MBA

Uses wrong form of there their and they're

Duely blundered from my thunderdolt.
