Americans say US cars top Asian autos

USA! USA! USA!

Refreshing news indeed. Ford is making some top quality vehicles while japan struggles with quality and the public is taking notice.

WASHINGTON — America's love affair with the automobile has a new spark — a renewed affection for U.S.-made cars after a long dalliance with foreign automakers.

Slightly more Americans now say the United States makes better-quality vehicles than Asia does, with 38 percent saying U.S. cars are best and 33 percent naming autos made by Asian countries, according to an Associated Press-GfK Poll.

Wow...this can not make Toyota happy. Kuddos to Ford and GM with their current and upcoming crop of vehicles...just don't screw it up. Keep up the good work.

Ford and GM have certainly made big strides, although I'm still waiting for a good small car from GM. I still think that Chrysler is total trash.

I agree about Ford. I think GM has some good vehicles too but should continue improving.

I have not liked Chrysler for a long time, although I do like the Challenger and the 300 is honestly a pretty nice ride too. I'm actually kind of curious to see what happens with Fiat.

Go read the "first drive" over at Autoblog regarding the new Cruze. Seems like they are going in the right direction with the Cruze. A hatchback with GM's 2.0L DI turbo would be awesome!

I disagree; Ford is making great improvements, but I don't see much of an effort from the other domestics. To early to tell if one of these new Ford _________'s will last 10 years with relatively no problems.

I still side with the Japanese and Korean (Hyundai only) for quality/reliability/value.

Yep GM and Ford make great cars. The small GM car you are waiting for is called the Chevy Cruze. Look it up and also look at the engine options.

And Chrysler always brings down the US car ratings compared to GM and Ford. I really wish I coudl say something good about them but they don;t have anything that would make me choose them over a GM/Ford car/truck.

GM has made huge improvements with the Malibu, Travere, Equinox, Camaro, and CTS.

Chrysler, yeah....meh.

Does every third thread here have to be about Toyota/Japanese car bashing?

I wasn't bashing toyota for the ft-eighty-fail, but I think everyone who likes cars is severely disappointed. That car would have brought fun and affordability back into Toyota's lineup. They need to stop being run by accountants and PR and focus groups etc....

Korean is still = crap.

I've been in a few of the newer Korean's as rentals...and they are not crap. I don't necessarily like the look of them, but they have figured out how to build an automobile. They are now slowly working on fine tuning it and getting better designs. The Korean's are definitely here to stay.

This x1100000 - they are making good progress, they better not drop the ball.

Don't worry, they let louisssss back in apparently, so I'm sure he'll more than make up for it with his blind love for honda and bash everything domestic 😉

Korean is still = crap.

Maybe not crap, per se, but Kia/Hyundai are very unimaginative. Most of their cars look like near ripoffs of other makers' designs. Meh.

I'm not so sure that GM has improved as much over the past year as Toyota has slid backwards. GM is just looking better by comparison. They dropped a couple good cars from their US line up when they killed Pontiac. I would have said axe Buick rather than Pontiac. I guess they're still selling cars to old farts though.

Have you paid any attention to buick at all the last couple years?

In the last 5 years GM has put out a lot of very solid entries:

Lambda Platform: GMC Acadia, Saturn Outlook, Buick Enclave, Chevy Traverse
Cadillac CTS...the wagon is a thing of beauty and the V is outstanding
Pontiac G8
Chevy Malibu
Chevy Equinox
Buick Lacrosse
Pontiac Solstice/Sky
Saturn Vue
Cadillac SRX

Future offerings that look to be winners:
Buick Regal
Chevy Cruze
Chevy Volt
Buick "Astra"
Chevy Aveo (ok...well I'm holding out hope...the current is trash)

Not to mention vehicles they've always excelled at like the Corvette and full size SUV's/Trucks.

GM still has some work to do, but they have really stepped it up in the last decade and I give a lot of the credit to Bob Lutz. Love him or hate him...he is a car guy and I think he got the company focused in the right direction...their product.

Ford is close to top-tier Asian manufacturers. No dice for Chevy or Chrysler.

I'd still take a recall-saddled Toyota over all three.

Hmmm. I'd take one of the older Toyotas. Of the current crop, only the trucks really seem world-class now. The interior of the Camry and Corolla is pretty bad, and they drive spectacularly blandly (personal taste, I know! Perfect for soccer mom, but they honestly put me to sleep!). Honda OTOH, I think the Accord is still a fantastic car. Honda needs an actual midsize though. The Civic is compact, and the Accord is definitely full size now, leaves a big gap.

It seems the world's best-kept secret what Honda is doing with the new Civic. It's due for a new gen imminently, and I'm very curious to see where they go with it. Competition in the compact market has exploded since the last gen premiered in '05 for the '06+ model. IIRC, the Corolla is also due for a replacement. Right now, I don't know why anyone would buy one of those rolling fails. If you want a Toyota compact, the Matrix is just a vastly superior vehicle for nearly the same price.

My guess is they will just uglify it. The 2004 Civic was a bit boring..but good looking. The 2005 remake looked a little spaceshippy, but still retained enough Honda in it and looked good as a 2 Door Si. Most of their latest cars are just ugly. Crosstour...horrible. CRV...what the hell is up with that snout...were they going for the "pig" asthetic? Ridgeline...words can't describe that thing. The Accord and Fit are not bad...but nothing inspiring. Please Honda...make the Civic pretty like you used to make cars. You know...the S2K, the Prelude, the early accords, the CRX. Please?
