Trade seems to be an indicative way that the US treats the rest of the world. The Free Trade agreement negotiations with Australia went something like this...

US. We are good at elaborately tranformed goods, give us free access to your markets
Australia. Ummm ok, how 'bout sugar and beef, we are good at that.
US. We are good at Media (Film & TV), give us free access to your markets. Oh by the way draft some laws banning parallel importing of DVD's and CD's while you are at it.
Australia. Ummm ok, how 'bout sugar and beef, we are good at that.
US. We subsidise our walnut production, give us free maccess to your market.

US, no probs you can have free access to beef in 18 years. Sugar, well stuff off.

So glad that Australia is a vauled ally and favoured trading partner.

Good luck on beef.

Typical Apologist response.

Are you capable of answering the question without dodging? Of course not.

What did I dodge? The question was "Do you Care?" My answer basically was "No, I do not care."

That's better. You did not answer it before.

Thanks for answering even if it shows how much you hate America.

Thanks. Fortunately it is not as bad as I made out, in that the tariff is being reduced every year, but it still will take 18 years to disappear.

18 years... and on his 18th birthday he find out it wasn't his?

Anyone that tells you America (or any western nation) believes in free trade is, to put it bluntly, full of sh1t.

"Sugar is extremely cheap, so it has almost no effect on us" was my answer. You really couldn't construe that to mean no? Come on...stop picking fights with people over nothing.

How exactly does it show I hate America? You do realize what'll happen if we don't subsidize the farmers, right? We'll start importing our sugar, effectively OUTSOURCING JOBS. You are one of the biggest opponents of outsourcing out there, yet when we subsidize businesses, you bitch. You can't have it both ways.

Free trade is a great idea in therory, of course so is communism and socialism.

Eh,

I'd feel better about it if the increased prices were due to consumption taxes (revenue) as opposed to subsidies (expenses) and tariffs.

Sugar is used in everything, and too much IMO. I think its one of the biggest reasons America is turning into the land of fatasses. Sugar is a cheap way to make crappy food products acceptable (like salt.) Look at a bottle of Ragu as a opposed to a good brand of pasta sauce like Barilla for example. If ingredients on something other than sweets say high fructose corn syrup, run away.

I get disgusted by a lot of food because they make it far too sweet but lacks nice flavor. If you go food shopping overseas or look at many imported food products, they are not made this way.

Now if we didn't have that little embargo on Cube our sugar would be twice as cheap--those damn commies.

just try to touch these tariffs and you'll see an argicultural lobby - mob getting ready to lynch you. Last stat I saw like that said that it costs us about $200,000K a year per job saved in agriculture.

Free trade is only for the blue states the red states gets protection.

Oh come on. I know you believe me to be stupid.

It is the subsidizing that is the cause for the importing. Are you that stupid??? 😕

I'm not a proponent of completely free markets, at least in the libertarian/anarchist sense. But by replacing imperialism with forced 'free trade' on terms imposed by the west, we've trapped the third world in perpetual poverty. Agricultural subsidies in Europe and North America are killing people in Asia and Africa.

I care, but not really. It would be nice to have real sugar in my soda instead of that high fructose corn syrup crap.

In the whole scheme of things, its not that much compared to the other crap we pay far too much for too little - war taxes, CEOs, corporate welfare, trial lawyers, gas, health insurance, prescription drugs, illegal immigrants, college, social programs, etc.

Well, Africa should be rich with all the comodities they have there. I really don't think it's the ag subsides hurting them.

China is doing much better and many years they are even exporting grain.

On the other hand we have people in NA dying from lack of decent medical care. I guess that I personally care more about them then I do people half a world away.

We already own the natural resources.

The people who die because of bad healthcare are a direct failure to help people you have the means of helping; a problem of neglect. By suggesting you can care about only one group, you're creating a false dichotomy.

In the third world, our policies directly contribute to starvation, disease, and general poverty. This isn't just neglect, it's actively damaging.

The people in those countries can't open up a business without being robbed by either the local criminals or their own government.

Sugar quotas finance some of the most reactionary rightwing businessmen in America, who finance the same quality of politician...

An endless loop of corruption and greed, paid for by taxpayers and consumers.

A longtime Denver business, Jolly Rancher Candies, moved to Canada a few years back- thanks to the effect of nafta and much lower Canadian sugar prices...

We made those countries be like that. Imperialism is bad.

This nation is going to go 9trillion into debt...

Hello...

Do you care?

I'd rather pay twice / three times as much for sugar then go a few trillion more into debt.

Sigh...
