Americans in New Zealand drink more

American students who come to New Zealand to study, drink twice as much alcohol than they would at home, University of Washington research has found.

The study found those who went to Europe, Australia or New Zealand drank more heavily while they were abroad than those who went to Asia, Latin America, the Middle East or Africa.

....

Pedersen's data also support the idea that students younger than 21, the legal drinking age in the US, take advantage of more relaxed drinking laws abroad. The underage students in his study nearly tripled their drinking, whereas students over 21 doubled their intake of alcohol.

My understanding is that the article isn't quite right - doesn't the drinking age in the USA depend which state you're in?

It did at one time. The Feds started to use Highway $$$$ as ransom for all states to raise the drinking age to 21. They are doing the same thing with DUI being a .08 limit.

I like to think that when most people go abroad, they tend to drink more/engage in more risky behavior than they would at home. I do not doubt this study. I don't know about "twice as much" though. From the college parties I have been to, if anyone was drinking "twice" what they were drinking, they would be dead. 🙂

Although if they are talking about under 21, it is because they have legal access to it as opposed to having someone else obtain it for them.

also, the study is weak for other reasons. Asia, Middle East, Africa? Seriously? These are not big drinking cultures. AT ALL. Fuck, Asians can hardly drink. (though they sure try)

comparing underage American students in those cultures to Aussie/Kiwi/European culture is lol.

Further proof that Americans are pretty much all irresponsible fools. It really bothers me that you come to my country and fuck it all up by being stupid drunks. Why can't you guys just stay in your own country for once? Why do you have to go and bring your violence and ignorance everywhere you go?

Burma/Myanmar, right?

About half of the American students I know drink heavily (they love their drinking games, especially beer pong and flip-cup) and the other half are teetotalers.

I think that was the point of the study....durr.

If I read the article right they are comparing American exchange students to American domestic students, not to NZ students.

I read it as Americans in NZ/Aussie/EU vs Americans in Asia/Mid East/Africa

(Well, I didn't read anything. Just what was quoted in OP. :sneaky🙂

This seems to be secondary argument. They drink more than the other exchange students, and 2x as much as domestic American students.

This is certinaly true (vs domestic students). Being able to drink publicly is a novelty that is hard to escape for Americans. When I was abroad for a spell, I was already US drinking age, so it wasn't a big deal for me. nothing novel, so I didn't exactly drink that much more...well, way more wine. that's for sure.
