BEIJING, China (CNN) -- A Chinese attacker stabbed two Americans, killing the man and wounding the woman, who were attending the Olympic Games on Saturday, according to the U.S. Olympic Committee.

The man also injured a female Chinese tour guide before leaping to his death around noon from the second floor of the Drum Tower, a popular Beijing tourist site, the official Chinese news agency Xinhua reported.

The USOC said the two Americans were family members of a coach for the U.S. men's indoor volleyball team. No other information about them was released.

The attacker was a 47-year-old man from the eastern Chinese city Hangzhou, a spokesman for the Beijing Municipal Government Information Office told Xinhua.

A White House spokesman said President Bush, who is attending Olympic events Saturday, was told about the attack against the Americans.

The U.S. Embassy and the White House have offered the victims' families whatever assistance is needed, the spokesman said.

The Drum Tower was built in 1272 during the reign of Kublai Khan and has been damaged and rebuilt several times, according to China tourism Web sites

With the radical Muslims in western China pissed off at the government, I bet this is not the only violence we see at the olympics.

It won't be the last but I am predicting that violence won't be a big deal, overall. I think the Chinese run a tight ship and it seems based on my new education of Chinese culture that I gleaned in 45 seconds of commentary that Chinese are gracious hosts 🙂

It's a bit much blaming a guy who stabs a tourist and jumps off a bridge on the IOC 🙂

i like to bash china as much as the next guy.... but so far this looks like something that could happen anywhere... even if a bomb goes off, that would not surprise me.

it's a shame we don't know why that guy did it. maybe the Chinese government cover up the evidence? do they still use used newspaper or tinfoil for food preparation in china?

Are you guys really so desperate to hate China that you will blame a single stabbing event on the IOC or are you being facetious?

If I recall correctly, there was a little event in the Atlanta Olympics that involved a bomb, so let's get grounded for a moment.

i was being facetious, i don't blame china for this one. and i remember the bomb in atlanta and the false arrest...

RIP

Richard Jewell

He was the instant scape goat they used to at the time. They destroyed his life.

We need more knife-control laws. Knife registration, a repeal of concealed knife permits, confiscation of pocket knives in public places, and a federal assault knife ban.

That guy probably had his home and neighborhood demolished to build the stadium or something similar for the olympics.

I could see how that could make someone lash out like that and then end their own life.

It's really too bad. I used to buy Bachman roses for my wife all of the time in MN, he ran a great company with some seriously superior flowers.
