American soldiers dieing in Afghanistan

Don't believe in the "war" happening over there, but it's a tragedy for the human race nonetheless.

I don't understand what you mean "in the war happening over there". Does that mean that you don't believe that it is happening?

Sorry, just understood. You don't believe in "the war".

I care, but I think that most of the guys over there know the risks and to many it is why they joined the armed forces. I would prefer that fewer American troops were at risk, but if the Afghans can't handle the remaining Al Queda then we need to finish the job ourselves.

its sad, but nope. Their and their family's business, not mine.

I wouldn't care if Canadian soldiers died either. People die all the time.

If I had the same training that those guys had, yeah.

What are you trying to get at?

Since I'm considering joining the USMC PLC program, that thought has passed through my mind more than once. The answer is yes.

I'm just an old vet trying to get a handle on how the younger generation feels about putting their butts into dangerous situations after 9-11 .

Well, let me say this then:

If there were a draft or call for a large number of new recruits, yes I would join the armed forces. For the moment, however, there are people who are far more capable than I am and the conflict is relatively small. I believe I would probably waste more resources than I could contribute.

God and language studies willing, though, I will be working for the government overseas in a couple of years (though probably not in the military). I'm sure many think I'm wussing out, but specialization is a necessary component of efficiency.

I was not implying that anybody should run out and join the military. We have enough good men/women doing that already.

My original question was, "do you care" and perhaps it should have been "how" do you care. Do you lose sleep at night thinking about our soldiers in Afghanistan? Do you dream of or have nightmares about what they are going through at this very moment? Can you imagine the chaos, the terror, the surrealistic life they are experiencing?

If we continue to ignore the type of world we live in and attempt to pacificy religious extremists, we will invitably be "putting our butts in dangerous situations" whether we like it or not.

Post 9/11 indiference is too costly a price to pay.

no for all 3... it just isn't my nature to do so.

I sleep soundly because of them...

That question could only be answered by Soldiers that have been in combat.

Btw, I'm probably closer to your age HappyPuppy than the youngsters we entrust the the defense of our country to but had to chime in...

Charles Manson brought up those same things during his trial. He called it murder, and accused Nixon during Vietnam.

Is this a cause that you would be willing to put your life on the line for?

Well we did not go to Afghanistan just to oust the Taliban and put in a new government. We went over there because our freedom and way of life was attacked and that is just where the bastards that attacked us happened to be hiding. I would go over there in a second to fight along side my fellow Americans. Unfortunately, I was PDQ'ed from military service several years ago.

Americans soldiers will die. Its not going to be an easy fight. It is a little like Vietnam, friends by day, enemy by night. The Afghans are playing both sides and it makes our mission more difficult, but that should not deter us in any way.
