The original Alice wasn't that great. i have the original discs and i finished playing it when it first came out. There is no replayability.Actually what I heard is the new one sucks cuz they kicked American McGee himself off the project a long time ago. Rumor on the internet is theres a rush to grab the original so people can see what the fuss was all about.

Get the new game, it comes with a copy of the old one. And they smoothed out the code so it actually runs on my fiances win 7 machine, our original copy of the old game was bad about hard locking and blue screening the system.
You and your nostalgia for old games. That's sacrilege
Maybe by today's standards the original isn't that great, but back then it was a unique game with a twist on the standard shooter genre. It had an immerse environment that pulled you in and kept you coming back for more.
I know for a limited time EA's Origin d/l service had the old game available if you pre-ordered, but they pulled that right after The Madness Returns shipped.
As to the free digital copy of the original Alice; it was available free to those who pre-ordered Madness Returns. i don't believe the offer is still open. Maybe i should sell my disks.I bought the new one and didnt get a copy of the old one. I got it from origin. Guess i need to call them.

😵
i played Alice when it first came out. i upgraded my PC to play it better. i did not say that it was awful - i said it "wasn't that great". It is a platformer.
Alice wasn't overall great. It was way too long and the episodes were stretched out to the breaking point. Alice is ultimately hack and slash. They took the clever idea of the children's toys as weapons and never ran with it. Another BORING shooter that was cleverly wrapped in fantastic art and level design to distract you from the same elements repeated over-and-over.
Madness Returns isn't much different than the original and the graphics are much better. The artwork and level design is a tie - awesome in both games (for their times).
Comparing Alice to Michelangelo's work is ridiculous; Alice was a fairly flawed but decent shooter/platformer.But saying Alice wasn't that great is like saying Michelangelo's work sucked.
I guess you (obviously) took a different feeling from the original then me. I didn't play a lot of shooters back then, RtCW and maybe UT so Alice was ground breaking for me.

Someone has the original on ebay for $30... lol a steal compared to $50.
It wasn't go for $5 last year, it's been a rather rare and desirable game for quite a while. I've seen new copies sell for a few hundred dollars.Wha?
WHAT THE FUCK!????
What numbnut thought it would be a good idea to raise the price on an old ass game that was going for 5 bucks last year?

I've been playing Madness Returns the past couple of days - hasn't gotten old for me yet. The artwork and level design really is unprecedented in comparison to everything else these days.
Word of note: if you go to the bottom of your AliceEngine.ini file, and change "GIsSpecialPCEdition" to TRUE, it will unlock all of the DLC and the original Alice game. There's also a "mature language filter" in there that you can disable.
While I'm at it, this thread was super useful in optimizing the game for me.
