American Idol: Cruel or are the contestants just deluded?

Queasy

Moderator<br>Console Gaming
My wife and I sat down and watched the Seattle auditions last night and we were literally crying with laughter at some of the contestants. I actually felt kind of bad for some of these people though because the AI screeners knew how bad they were but put them through to the judges anyways. But then I thought, well they are just self-deluded enough to even compete so they probably have nobody to blame but themselves.

Still, I then heard about people like Rosie O'Donnell going off on AI because of how they poke fun at people on the show....which, in O'Donnell's case, is the pot calling the kettle black.

Anyways, so what is it? AI too mean or the contestants too deluded?

edit: Added 15 minutes of fame option.

I haven't noticed a difference between this season and any other season.

Edit: P.S. WTH is AI?

Nevermind AI is American Idol. Duh.

He's just being himself.

If you tell someone that they can't do something, usually its the best medicine, as they will turn around and work harder and better at it to prove you wrong. It also makes for good television seeing their dreams shattered. But that is them hitting bottom and reevaluating what they previously thought about themselves.

some of those kids are insane and need to be told they can not sing

And you have to know that if you're gonna be on that show, that you stand a really good chance of being ridiculed on TV. And if you're a total goofball, then you can bet on it.

What did they expect? Isn't that what AI is known for?

I'm sure at least 50% of these 'bad' contestants go overboard to ensure their 5 minutes of fame by being horrendously bad.

You'll hardly ever see the middle ground people, those that, with some more skill would've made it through.

Often the problem is their family, pastor, etc... telling them that they are sooooooooo good. Then Simon brings in a dose of needed reality to their life.

They're making fun of 'innocent' people for ratings. I guess the concept of "you'll never win if you never try" should just be forgotten, because if you try, you'll just be made fun of by some guy who's obviously better than you.

I'm just wondering what the parents/family are doing for some of these deluded 16-year olds. Take that 16-year old juggling kid for example. Did anyone bother to tell him he can't sing? Why did they all just stand there while he swore at the camera, cried, and made an ass of himself?

Some of these people who go on there though know damn well they suck and aren't even close to being able to win. I think it's good that the judges go on there and ridicule the crap out of them for wasting the judges time with them.

Although I will admit it's definitely fun to watch that crap lol 🙂

But I mean, that guy who was a computer engineer and was just a whack job ... there is no way in hell he seriously thought he was a good singer. Or that one guy who was in a band and sung every song in his grungy voice. I mean come on now ...

EDIT: and i seriously do think that some of these people are actors tryign to get their 15 mins of fame or trying to make some kind of a break out by being exposed to 40 million viewers.

At least they tried.

I know I wouldn't go on there even if I was confident in my singing abilities, because I'd rather not take that chance. That's the point I'm trying to stress... at least these people take that chance.

Political Correctness strikes again. What is this whining about? These people have had ample time to see the show and how it works. If you don't want to risk being made fun of, don't go on the show. That's the formula, they make fun of terrible singers, and then select a winner from the decent ones. Nobody is forcing people to audition.

a lot of the contestants are lied to their whole life by people who don't want to hurt their feelings. it's such a sad joke to have those talentless clowns who can't see on tune to save their lives say, "but my co-workers, my mom, my friends all tell me I CAN SING!"

it's our "everyone's a winner" society. instead of telling it like it is we sugar-coat things to the point where we are downright lying to people.

then you are a pvssy 😛

my point is that these people have to know that they aren't even remotely close to being qualified to be the next American Idol, and that they go on there to be ridiculed and made fun of, and because of that, they atleast still get to be on tv.

How about option D.... The contestants know that they suck, but they just want their 15 minutes of fame.

After all, some people, somewhere, DID buy William Hung's CD.

It's what the public wants to see. We enjoy laughing at people that really suck. My favorite is the dude that likes to stare in space - and did they say he was a software engineer?

So we start out the show watching people suck, and then will eventually get to the people that can sing. Works for me.

in minneapolis the first night, a contestants boss flew her, her sister and he and his wife to minneapolis in order for her to compete. he honestly thought she sang well, and she was borderline horrendous.

so, he deluded not only her but himself, simon and co kept saying that the boss must have been getting some.

I still admire William Hung, because that guy knew he had 15 minutes of fame, so he USED it as much as he could. He didn't sulk or whine, boy milked it for all it was worth while it was there.

Some of them are so bad I can't help but wonder if they don't go up there knowing full well they suck but just want to get on TV. In some cases I think they probably even exaggerate just to be sure that if they can't get on TV for being good they'll get on for being absolutely attrocious.
