I'm in the USA, in Florida, and we also get Martin Luther King's Birthday and Good Friday. We don't get Christmas Eve, however.

I guess your company expects you to work for the money they are paying you. Sucks to be you, doesn't it.

How does it suck? And since when is Day after Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve a holiday?

Holidays observed by his company.

Plus every company I've ever worked for gave us off Friday after Thanksgiving and XMas Eve.

Ahhhhh ok, I thought he meant national (actual) holidays. I've had to work both of those days, unfortunately 🙁

are you looking for developers? 🙂

A friend of mine in the Netherlands get's 30 days of vacation a year. He went to Chechnya for a month this year and camped on the side of a lake, with his wife and kids by the way.

We just have different cultures I think. In the US you can only do that stuff if you're wealthy or a bum. It's not so easy for the middle class to do it here. At least the Saturday work day has been eliminated from US customs. 🙂

Wow! Do you have to work a few years before getting 4 weeks of leave annually?

You accrue 4 hours per pay period (every two weeks) for three years and then 6 hours after that. Works out to 19.5 days of leave per year (roughly four working weeks).

Maybe this is why it was recently widely reported that 49% of Americans are unhappy with their current jobs.

You notice that our elected officials (who recently voted themselves a pay increase) have off for "the holiday".
Like they were trying to get out of town last week for the "Thanksgiving Holiday".
Or they take off the second week of August for the "Labor Day Holiday".
What's up with that?

I would prefer to have a weaker economy (if that's possible) and have a little more time to LIVE LIFE.
Americans take fewer holidays than any other major economy in the world.
And we have more strokes and heart attacks.

Now they have discovered that most Americans are reluctant to take extended vacations, because they fear that their jobs may somehow be at risk.
I know that's a fact where I work (big three telecom) where we are laying off thousands and thousands.
So you defer vacation for a presumed better stature at work and you get canned anyway.

I work a 60 hour week at times I need to feel guilty about wanting to take a weeks vacation?
And I get FOUR WEEKS PAID vacation?

Slave to the corporation who view us all as just another expendable asset.
Like the furniture and the computers.

I hate to take extended vacations because my work accumulates while I'm away. I dread going back to work after a week or two off!

So you get 6 hrs of AL as well? It is nice being a federal employee 🙂 Especially since every Friday is my AWS day and christmas and New years are on thursdays. This way I can only take 3 days off (12-29 - 12-31 ) and get ~12 days off 😀

Why not go into business for yourself?

I never understood why so many people whine about being stuck in a crappy job. Free enterprise affords you the opportunity to start your own business and be your own boss. No one should be locked into thinking they have to work for someone else.
