And to answer your question, then EVERY country should be able to fly a "patriotic" flag

um... i thought they do fly flags... which would be patriotic, i assume.

Like was mentioned above...................a flag is a flag right..........why does it matter if it's a brand new one, the one from Iwo Jima, or the one from the WTC?????? They're all just flags so let us choose which one to fly!;)

how is it unique? what is to stop any other country from flying a patriotic flag? if they want to, go ahead. it's not like it is a completely different flag. it isn't as if we are flying the "don't tread on me" flag. it is still the same flag that we fly everyday, it just has a symbolic meaning for those of us that do live in the US. (well a lot of us anyway)

cuz it's evidently unfair to the other countries? like i said, as much as we'd like to believe, the olympics doesn't just revolve around the us(even though we win the most medals haha), gotta be equal

i could personally care less, but i can see how a foreigner would find it offensive

ONCE AGAIN
i am not asking for a fight, just think as an outsider for a bit, the olympics are NOT about America

no, but this issue clearly is. if for example, something like this happened to canada, do you think the ioc would have had the same judgement? i have a hard time believing it.

And how do we know none of them ever flew a "unique" flag????? Also, I agree.....I fail to see how flying any particular flag would garner any advantage/disadvantage to anyone.............

I hate to be the one to throw cold water on the ones who feel this is just folks with a beef against the U.S. trying to stick it to us, but i wanted to point out one small thing. Isn't the normal opening ceremony procedure that each nation's athletes form a parade-type procession, with an athlete or other chosen individual given the honor of carrying that country's flag to present during the march?

If so, isn't the flag which was recovered from the WTC rubble a bit large for a single individual, or even a small group of people, to be carrying during a procession-style parade? That's a full garrison-style flag after all, a bit unweildy, not to mention heavy....

alright

what if a chinese person complained that the olympics was becoming too American? they'd have good reason, and the IOC would comply because the olympics is an INTERNATIONAL event, NOT an american event

and re: canada

i don't know anybody who hates canada lol

if that is true, which i have no idea if it is and you have no link or anything to back it up, then my arguement would change. then the IOC should have said the flag does not fit into the standards for size that the IOC uses during opening ceremonies. wouldn't that have been a better reason than saying the flag was politically driven? do you have any evidence that suggests that the flag is larger or of a different size than the flags normally used? (i agree that if the flag is a different size than the flags normally used, then the flag shouldn't be used)

that's the f*ing point, had this happened to other countries, like canada, belgium, etc, this would not be an issue.

what is your point? that we shouldn't fly it because IF the communists complained, then we wouldn't fly it?

American Haters? Huh? I'd imagine that the cities that are yet to be awarded the event just once while the U.S. has hosted the game 3 times in the last 20 years might feel that they have been slighted by the IOC.

If there were a large amount of complaints that the olympics, when based in the US, are becoming too patriotic, and the IOC agreed with them, then yes we shouldn't fly it

A regular US flag would do no?

<< Instead, it will be raised next to the Olympic flame during Friday night's opening ceremony at Rice-Eccles Stadium, serving as the official U.S. flag. >>

i'm not seeing your logic. so basically, we bend over and take it in the ass, because they said so?

A regular US flag would do no?

yes, but so would *that* flag.

few points, the olympics are about bringing nations together. flying that flag will let us share our grief with the world, bringing us all closer together. secondly, wtc affected the entire world. not just the united states. that flag not only represents american perseverance, but also perserverance of the world against terrorism.

I couldn't agree with GoPunk more.

I'd post my own, but Texmaster isn't worth it.
