American Gods - Neil Gaiman

Edit:
So I'm at my local library yesterday looking for Neil Stephenson's Snow Crash and on a whim I grabbed Gaiman's American Gods. I started reading a few pages before going to bed and before I knew it I was about 80 pages in, I've been reading more today every free moment I have. I think tomorrow I'll probably be done at this rate. I had no idea Gaiman was such a good author.

I bought this book from amazon a few months back and I finally got around to cracking it open this week. I'm about 3/4th through the book so far and its a fairly good read, it's not really all that deep of a book but it's an entertaining read so far. In fact I just ordered the sequel (Blade of Tyshale) today from amazon.

At this point I still hold all new books up to George RR Martin's when it comes to scifi and fantasy and while it's nowhere in that league I would definitely recommend it as an entertaining lightweight book. I'm debating on whether or not to start reading Steven Eriksen's Garden of the Moon, but since the series is'nt close to being finished I might hold off a little while. What I really need right now is to find another author similar to Martin with a completed series.

What's that about?

Anyone read the novel The Last Templar? I saw it at the bookstore today and I read the DJ, it looks kind of interesting.

Its been a George R R Martin festival. Bought "Game of Thrones" on a whim, which set the hook. Read the rest of the series in quick succession, and have just finished "Feast for Crows." That's it until GRR cranks out the next volume, supposedly summer 06?

that guy is great, I can't say enough good things about his writing

Stover wrote a pair of novels in a different fantasy world that were very good, see amazon for the titles.

Right now I'm reading Steven Brust's Paths of the Dead, it's one in the series of books written in a style similar to Alexandar Dumas, that aren't nearly as good as the Vlad Taltos books.

Right now I am full steam into They Passed this Way by Barry Ralph detailing the innundation of Americans into Australia during WWII. It's pretty fascinating if you're into that kind of stuff.

Midnight Tides - 5th book in the Malazon series by Steven Erikson.

How many books are planned for that series?

I heard it is a 10 book series. Seems like he writes pretty fast if you look at amazon.co.uk website. It lists book 8th will be out by the end of this year - unlike some author i.e. Jordan. :/

btw - I got the paperback uk version for 3, 4 & 5 on ebay. Here in the states, the local bookstores only carry up to the 3rd book.

Not a series, but Gaiman's "American Gods" is a really good read.
Another one that's been around for a while is "Winters Tale" by Mark Helprin. Its almost impossible to say what it is about but its one of the most memorable books I've read.

Thanks for the suggestion bro

I read American Gods last year. It is kick-ass. Right now I'm reading "One Million A.D." a collection of novellas about the far future. Good stuff so far.

I lost my copy of AG, I didn't get to finish it when my friend wanted to borrow it... this was like 2 years ago!

Books I've read recently: Memoirs of a Geisha(captivating read... mediocre movie), The 5 People you meet in Heaven(by same guy who wrote Tuesdays with Morrie... good books), and Seventh Son(a few chapters in)

American Gods started out great, then built itself up even more, then fizzled out near the end. Great premise, great story, weak-ass resolution. 🙁

Check out
J.V. Jones
Robin Hobb (not a fan of hers, but supposed to be popular)

Books:
I liked Doc Sidhe - it's not really like Martin, but it's basically Doc Savage, man of bronze in a fantasy world set in the 1930's
The first 8 Wildcards books are good, edited by Martin with a few stories by him. Can be hard to find, and get VERY dark, but with the exception of a particular authors, very good.
If you're open to comic books/graphic novels, try anything by Alan Moore. Swamp Thing, for darker fair. Top Ten and maybe Supreme for lighter stuff. Doctor Strange/Doctor Doom: Triumph and Torment is my favorite comic ever, written by 80's comic god Roger Stern, but it's almost impossible to find. Likewise, Stern's Origin of the Hobgoblin trade. The origin of the last GOOD spider-man foe (before you ask, Venom sucks, thus he isn't a good spidey villian). The Fantastic Four trades by John Byrne. The Daredevil Visionarires: Frank Miller vol. 2 and 3 (NOT 1, it was horrible). By Dan Slott, GLA, Spider-man/Human Torch, the two She-Hulk trades. Libraries are stocking comic trades nowadays, though not always a recent or thorough selection, but it's worth seeing if they carry any of these.

If you like Gaiman check out his "Sandman" comic book series, they should be available in graphic novel as I don't think the series is ongoing any longer. Excellent writer.

R R Martin's A Feast For Crows is out, or at least that's what the book cover says on the book that I am holding.

Does anyone recommened something if I like Martin's books?

I REALLY need some books

I also enjoyed Ender's Game and Speaker for the Dead, Neuromancer, Dune, etc.

Just finished one of the Jared Diamond's books: Evolution of the Third Animal, or somethin, good, but nowhere near sci fi, or fiction for that matter, and Guns Germs and Steel is good, but long, and at times VERY hard to read.

American Gods caught me by surprise. I typically read SF, and this was recommended by association through Amazon (I think in relation to one of China Mievelle's novels). Very interesting read.

the quasi-sequel to AMerican Gods is out now.

it's called "Anansi Boys"

I can't wait to read it.

I'm also waiting for Erikson's 6th: The Bonehunters!!

Hey crystal, you read the novellas yet? I just got The Healthy Dead. Blood Follows was cool and Knight of Knives was AWESOME.
