American Football Injuries

Why does it seem that players get serious injuries more often than ever before?

I have watched football since I was a child and never can I remember players getting hurt anywhere near this frequency.

Anyone else think so?

There's much more strict rules than before to protect the players. We've had a few guys out for the concussion thing already that never would have been out before. It sucks but they are trying to protect their investment.

diagnosis probably.

concussions used to get shrugged off, now you have protocol to prevent them even if you feel fine

I'm not familiar with everything else but sports medicine advances have probably helped ensure that hurt players can play longer in their careers

If you see more career ending injuries, that may be a different story then

I'm not talking about concussions. I'm talking about snapping legs, arms, and anything else that makes a loud sound when it breaks.

i've watched alot of college football and never seen anyones leg/arm snap

Recently? This year? They won't even replay most of them, let alone talk about them. If they are spoken of in the media,"So and So is out with an injury." They don't tell you his leg is broken and 45 degrees in the wrong direction.

And, if you so much as blink and miss the play where they are injured, it is as if it didn't happen.

As some of you have gathered, I'm speaking almost entirely about college ball.

I don't know, but at this point I'd pretty much rather have a prevention for torn ACLs than a cure for cancer or AIDS. I'm exaggerating, don't hang me.

If there's another torn ACL (or anything, really) this bball season, I will stab the closest person to me.

I'm sure some of it has to do with the strength training techniques and "supplements" that are used where muscles are growing much faster and stronger than the connective tissue that ties them together/to bones. They are too strong/fast for their bodies and things just pop. Combine that with guys like Julius Peppers that are 300 pounds and faster than any human should be at that size and it's like a train running into you at awkard angles.

also keep in mind that you see alot more injuries because you see alot more games. Almost every BCS matchup is televised these days.

Queue up LT's hit on Namath. It ended his career.

Or McCaffery's catch and hit by a NY Giant Safety. Basically ended his career.

Both were leg snaps, Namath's was pretty gruesome.
