i wanted a long hotel stay abroad, but the place didnt have continuous availability, so i split the reservation to another place

once i was actually there, they never asked that i checked out, so i stayed at one place the whole time. too lazy to cancel the reservation at the alternate place


later i found out i had a 250$ cancellation charge. called amex saying "i never stayed here they billed me". rep asked whether i even attempted to cancel and i frankly said i did not. "we'll try to help you but without proof (ie phone record) of attempt of cancellation, it'll be difficult for us to do anything"



well today i found out the charges got reversed. haha. win
 
On the subject of American Express. I just today received and activated the Amex blue cash credit card. They gave me a $4000 credit limit and I want to use the card to pay my tuition right now. Tuition is $2600, will this look bad or negatively affect my credit if I use more than 50% of the credit limit just moments after activation? FYI I will pay off the balance in full.
 
Cool that they did that for you. Not cool that you were lazy and the hotel had to eat the fee thanks to the nice people at your CC place.

what fee? they didnt "lose" anything, unless there was lost revenue due to my reservation taking up ONE nights stay
 
There very well may have been lost revenue for exactly that reason. FWIW, you took up that scheduling slot since you first reserved it.
 
Love Amex. I pay a small annual but it's been more than worth it and had paid itself over in the first 2 months via rewards, level of consumer protection and customer service. I even get insurance discounts and reserved US open tickets. For once they give me the confidence to go out there and make otherwise uncomfortable purchases.

People like the OP are what's wrong with this country - the entitlement mentality. I shouldn't have to pay for my mistake, let them take the loss! It's a disgusting attitude, and you should be ashamed of yourself.

It's a sad day when people are too lazy to make a literal 1 minute phone call. This is probably why a lot of places don't accept Amex cards anymore. 🙁

Uhhh yeah, maybe that and the absurd transaction fees that AmEx charges merchants.

miri may be wrong, but they don't have to be at 100% capacity to lose money from an unused reservation. They may have run out of that particular type of room (pool-side, ocean-view, smoking/non, or first floor, for example) or simply run out of other rooms desirable to a particular customer.

This is exactly why we stopped accepting AMEX cards at my work. We performed about $5k worth of services for a company (software related services) and the software did not work exactly as they wanted which had nothing to do with us. They refused to pay us for our work and AMEX just gave them their money back. We had a signed legal agreement but it meant nothing. Since then, no AMEX.


Granted, I use my AMEX Blue for everything and get more than $100 back in tax free rewards every year. I love it.

But I still have to agree with everyone else. I would never abuse the system in this way.
