I want to be able to hear what you crazies sound like when I'm reading your posts.

  1. Go here and take the quiz: NY Times Dialect Quiz

  2. Right click and copy the image of your dialect map.

  3. Paste it into your response below.

Grew up in the NYC area, spent time in the Midwest for college, in NYC for grad school and start of my career, and now in the Boston region.

Have not picked up the dropping of the r.

My family is from the upstate NY area, but I moved away young so thankfully don’t have the ridiculous accent. Guess I use their wording though.

I grew up on military bases, and then traveled a bit before I landed in the Midwest (have since moved). I did spend six months in the mitten part of Michigan, where I still have family, but they're Wisconsin transplants.

Makes sense since the three places I have lived are San Antonio, Houston, and LA

Can't get to it because of the paywall, but I grew up until I was 10 in western Mass...talked about quahtahs, dollahs, go to the pahk...drink dahk beah...

Then, moved to eastern WA... where I shed most of that Mass accent. However, I've moved around the western states for the past 60+ years, so...kind of a generic "'Murican" accent...peppered with oddities like youse, y'all, axe me, and a bunch of other things.

Strangely enough, if you go to this article linked below and click the link "How Y’all, Youse and You Guys Talk" for the quiz there is no paywall on it.

What's funny is I changed one answer from "Y'all" to "You guys", which I also use a lot, and that one change got my results to be centered on LA and Oxnard with San Antonio no longer one of my top 3 matches while it was my #1 match when using "Y'all".

I might try it after work. But regarding accents... I was sitting in a Chilis in Fort Worth Texas. The bartender asked me where I was from, maybe Missouri? I said well in Missouri they call it Missoura, but I don't have an accent, you do. She laughs, and I said "flip through a dozen channels on your television, do most of them sound like me, or do they sound like you, sugah?" and of course I was right.

Funniest thing I ever heard was in Corpus Christi Texas for the Army, and I was at a swimming pool and a Chinese kid about 3 years old had a southern drawl over a Chinese accent. I was like wtf lol.
