I do blame the nazi party but what's the point? The republic was lost when we didn't get a primary so we'd have a fighting chance in the election. Anyone with a room temperature IQ had to know this was exactly how a Trump presidency would be when the clerics on the supreme court decided he was completely above the law on anything Trump called an official action.
The Republic was lost when we chose not to pass HR1 and the John Lewis Voting Rights Act. So in the first few months of 2021 it was over and lots of us saw this coming as a result.
We have governed as a center right party since Clinton, and finally we are indistinguishable from the Republican party of 20 years ago. We spent the last four years aiding and abetting a genocide, hiring more cops, increasing military spending, deporting rather than naturalizing more residents, expanding prisons while failing to expand Obamacare. The few bright spots, such as the antitrust expansion are slow processes and unfortunately will not pay off due to the new administration.
So yeah, we lost. And we were lost the moment we embraced the concept of 'triangulation' as though the far right was a movement that could be negotiated with, legitimizing them in the process and losing our values along the way.
This was preventable, but not by some hypothetical perfect candidate. It was preventable by doing the hard work of building our platform, communicating our goals to the public, and passing it in small chunks over decades at all levels of government. Which Republicans have been doing since the late 70's.
The Democratic party needs to proudly be the party of civil rights for all, equity in opportunity and support, and demonstrating our values by example and policy both nationally and internationally. We consistently fail that bar which aids the narrative that "we are all the same" in the minds of voters.
The right has no need to hide the fact that they are the right, they espouse their values, even the unpopular ones, and few punish them for it. The left needs to stop apologizing and aggressively respond to societal problems with how leftist policies address them, while highlighting problems right wing solutions create for people in every class.
