American colour pictures from 1939-1943.

Surprising quality. Some of those look like they are taken yesterday (i.e. 2010 quality *AND* 2010 content)

#11 Backstage at the "girlie" show at the state fair. Rutland, Vermont, September 1941. Reproduction from color slide. Photo by Jack Delano. Prints and Photographs Division, Library of Congress

NFSW !!!! Okay, totally kidding. Very safe for work. "girlie" show must have had a different definition back then.

# 14 Orchestra at square dance

Oh yeah, there is definitely a difference in definitions.

That movie WALL-E comes to mind when comparing those people and my contemporaries, myself included. On the other hand, they would definitely flip out if they saw how much richer in terms of material wealth we are nowadays (I do realize that most of those pix were taken in a rural setting).

Here's another orchestra of the times.

looks like the homesteaders ate pretty well back then, their dinner doesnt look bad, neither does the BBQ.

love the giant PBR sign above the railyard in Chicago

Fascinating pics, thanks for the link.

Looks like a very strange time. The era looks very dirty and the land looks vast. Things seem to be much more urbanized/concentrated now.

yeah, but dinner was once/week.

😉

also love the massive PBR sign.

It's just utterly mindblowing how big of an impact two generations of the human race can make on the world. The singularity is near.

hmm this was taken in 1940 right?

The children in this photo would be around 60 years old! Most of them dead!

Maths, we have them?

Anyway, amazing photos, as are the ones of WWII linked at the bottom of the page. Lots I hadn't seen before.
