Flying over LAX for 3 hrs already, why can't they find a less densely populated area to circle around.

Its not in any danger of crashing. They're just burning fuel before they land to lessen any risk of a fire.

Didn't they use to dump fuel? Or is that a big no no now?

737 Can't dump fuel.

"Authorities had said the pilot was going to attempt to land at 12:45 p.m. after dumping fuel around Catalina Island."

I assure you, a 737 cant dump fuel. The only A/C in AA's fleet that can are the 767s, 777s, and A300s.

if they gotta fly around for 3 hours why not land at their destination =P

Weight on a bad tire == bad for gear and increase safety issue.

Similar to why you do not drive your car for miles with a flat.

They need Steven Seagul stat!

Steven Seagull? Is he supposed to fly everyone to safety?

I think my favorite Steven Seagal performance was in Executive Decision. Seeing him get sucked out of the plane was so beautiful.

the tire popped on takeoff... if they rolled it up and flew to toronto, they would have even less gas and weight when they emergency land... maybe they didnt like canadas safety measures =p

I was wondering the same thing. The tire already blew, why not fly to Toronto and take care of it there.

Maybe there is a safety policy of landing ASAP after something bad happens, just in case something else bad happened. From the airlines point of view, better safe than sorry. Its better to delay a plane for a few hours than to have a plane crash.

Because its not safe to retract landing gear with a blown tire on the rim. It fits into a very tight space as it is, and a tire could jam it up. That'll make for a really interesting landing 😉

Also, the 737 has no main gear doors, and it actually uses the wheels to seal the opening. Pic

 So wait, if the plane with the flat tire was on a treadmill...

That clears it up completely. I would not be retracting blown gear either.

Apparently it was an Airbus

It doesn't say that anywhere, they also show a picture of a 737....

My bad. I saw pics in the article but they were from a similar Jetblue incident.

Ah, good point, I didn't know they had no wheel doors or something like that, interesting! Thanks for clearing that up!

It was supposed to be the nose landing gears btw. When they were landing, I watched it live and the pilot kept the nose up forever, setting it down so ever gingerly. Ends up being a nothing. What's really funny was the announcers focused on the wrong plane in the beginning, after that one landed they said "Never mind, that wasn't the plane".
