Spawned from "A Few Draft Related Questions..."

Seriously, what the hell is wrong with many of you? It seems like the general concensus is that a Draft was instituted, most of you would dodge it or look for a backdoor to get out. You live in this country and enjoy the freedom it provides. If there is a draft, suck it up, be a man (or woman) and serve your time for this nation.

This nation has turned into a bunch of beached whales that sun themselves with TV waves and are too afraid of their own reflections to step up for a nation you should love. Even if you dont agree with the politics, you should have no qualms about giving a few years for the U S of A if it is asked of you.

Draft = go to war, get shot at. Why should I unwillingly fight in a war I believe is unjust? I'm not going to go get my ass shot off in Fallujah just to win a GWB pissing contest, sorry.

I haven't replied to any of those threads, yet. I would serve if a draft were implemented. It would be tough to leave my wife for that long, but I have chosen to live in the US, and I will serve in the military if I was called to.

Funny, cause I thought the thing that made America great was the FREEDOM that was given to us, including the freedom not to serve if we didn't want to. (And before you jump on me, I plan on serving after I graduate from college) And in times of war, there's never been a shortage of people willing to defend this country. Well, I should say in times when the war was JUSTIFIED. Vietnam was never a good idea, and Iraq isn't either. Though Iraq is less of a bad idea than Vietnam, but it's starting to blow up in our faces.

If you live here it's your duty. Nobody WANTS to go to war.

I would go, but I'd never get taken.

Edit: perhaps I should clarify. I don't believe in this administration's rule of America, not "America" as a concept.

Ditto.

How can you expect someone to fight wholeheartedly in something they do not believe in?

Of course not, but there's a difference between going to war over something relatively clear-cut (ie- WWII) and the current fiasco in Iraq. Like I said, I'm not going to go kill or be killed for a ridiculous "war" like Iraq. I have no problem serving my country in the event that military force is actually warranted.

The draft has always been controversial in this country. It does not help that there have always been exceptions of one sort or another for certain classes of people to exempt themselves from it. When it was first instituted in the Civil War there were draft riots in New York City largely fueled by the $300.00 exemption. In the 1960's that $300.00 exemption was called student deferment.

I wouldn't fight because this is a war that we shouldn't be in. It is an exercise in imperialism and, as Fausto said, a pissing contest. I would feel differently if we had been attacked by Iraq (or any other sovreign nation) or if any of our allies were under siege. But this is not the case. The pentagon invaded a sovreign nation without just cause, and they had better solve their mistakes without bringing mandatory military service as an option.

I would burn a drat notice over serving.

"I wouldn't serve in a war that I don't believe it."
So there is a war out there that you do believe in?

Look, how many people are in the military? And how many military personnel are serving in Iraq?

If there ever was a draft, you are eligible, and it looks like you are going to get picked then freaking volunteer and pick the job that you want. How hard is that?

Thats one reason no nation has seriously entertained the notion of invading the U.S. mainland since the early 1800s. This country has more than enough firearms to discourage that.
