America, prepare for... chessboxing?

Cliffs?

So, what, it's like chess, but when a piece would normally just be captured, they duke it out to see which one gets taken?

"Rubingh cracks a copy of a hardcover Serbian comic book. He runs a finger along a few panels picturing a man with a leg that has been shorn off at the knee, gushing blood. This is where Rubingh got his idea for chessboxing. The comic, "Alexander Nikopol Gesamtausgabe," is part of a trilogy created by Enki Bilal, a Serbian comic book legend. It tells the story of an apocalyptic society of escalated violence, set in the year 2034. In this world, hockey is played with steel, stick blades sharpened into knives. And two men box one another on a chessboard floor, the match ending with one player braining the other with the queen."

That looks like an awesome book though, wish I could find out what it is.

no, it's actually really well thought out.

11 alternatnig rounds, 5 boxing 6 chess. 12 minutes in the chess game per player (like playing wtih a clock). win by either checkmate on the board (or time running out), or by knockout in the ring.

It's basically supposed to put both mental, emotional, and physical strain on the contenders, I assume, and it does it pretty damn good job at that. You're thinking about your moves while trying to box and avoid taking heavy hits, or you're getting disoriented in the ring and making mistakes in your gameplay. Either way, you have to be able to protect yourself (either your king or your face) enough to make whichever portion of the fight you have an advantage in (if any) shine, and claim a victory.

10/10 for ingenuity.

My initial reaction was to be completely incredulous, but now I see the potential behind the 'art'. I'm pretty curious to see further developments.

My first thought is... ok, couldn't a good professional boxer just learn enough chess to survive the first round, and then knock your opponent's ass out the first time you fight with gloves on?

But maybe these chessboxers are REALLY good in both aspects, and it's not that simple to do? Or maybe it could happen, but there's no incentive for a pro boxer to do so? /shrug

I think it would have been funnier if after everytime a piece is captured, the person doing the capturing gets a free punch.
