America or United States?

JEDI

Lifer
if you're from USA and visiting a foreign country:

What do you say where you're from when asked?

The west.

If they ask where in the west I would respond "Canada".

I am ashamed of our politcal system / foreign policies to the point I wouldn't want them to know where I really lived. As an individual we are often judged by how our government acts since they are the face the world sees.

Depends. In Canada and the UK "the states." In France the question generally was posed as follows: "You're English? / Where in England are you from?" To which I replied "I'm American." Otherwise I'd say I was from les Etats-Unis.

I'd say the US or United States. Either one is ambiguous. There are two continents named America and other countries named the United States of _____ (e.g. Mexico). I guess if you followed the example of those other countries, America would be appropriate. But I say the US. They know what you mean either way.

Unless you are going to a country where they chop off heads.

Exactly. LOL @ the pussies who lie about being Canadian.

What would be hilarious is if an American claimed they were from Canada and were then asked who the Canadian Prime Minister is. I'd guess better than 90% of Americans would not know.

Probably 50% don't know what the capital of Canada is.

"I'm from Canada."
"ORLY? Who's your MP?"
"My what?"
" Nevermind... Where aboots in Canada do you live?"
"Calgary"
"Oh, cool. I think Ive been there before... where is that again?"
"Sas-katch-iwan?"

I'd always say "I'm from the States." Some ask "which State"; and I'll say "Wisconsin"; they'd say "where is that?" or "oh" lol

Canada has a Prime Minister and a capital? When the hell did that happen? I though it was just a block of ice with decent hockey teams and loons.

Don't forget the tank...

Depends. If I were in, say, Britain, I'd say "I'm American." If I were in Germany or Austria "Ich bin Amerikaner." In Russia or the Ukraine, "? ??????????."

The ISO (International Organization for Standardization) country code for here is "US" (without periods).

So internationally the "official" designation is United States.

US / USA / The States / Americano ...whatever you use, you'll be understood.

My friends went down to TJ for a weekend and on border back to CA, one of my friends said "watch this guys", when the border patrol guy asked them where they were from my friend said "America". They ended up getting questioned for a while so if you happen to goto TJ and are driving back to CA, when they ask you where you're from or going to, DON'T SAY AMERICA.

EDIT: The guy who said it was mexican, which was probably a huge factor in getting them questioned.

"america"

the part about lying about being canada for safety or political sensitivy... really, really lame. almost as lame as a body-wallet
