demand for bacon is through the roof!

personally i can't stand the hype around bacon. sure it's good, but the 'bacon makes everything better' schtick is getting really fucking old. i'd rather have an asian style braised pork belly than bacon any day of the week and twice on sundays. and for breakfast sandwiches? taylor ham/pork roll is far superior. luckily i live in north jersey where taylor ham is everywhere. if you don't, i strongly suggest googling it and ordering some.
i'm a lucky son of a bitch.

http://www.usatoday.com/story/money...eserves-hit-50-year-low-prices-rise/97327794/

"The country's bacon reserves are at the lowest levels in half a century.

In other words, pig farmers can't keep up with the world's sizzling appetite for those fatty, smoky strips of sheer eating pleasure.

The Ohio Pork Council, a Columbus-based non-profit, reported Tuesday that demand for frozen pork belly, frequently made into bacon, is outpacing supply.

“Today’s pig farmers are setting historic records by producing more pigs than ever,” said Rich Deaton, president of the organization. “Yet our reserves are still depleting.”

There are literally not enough little piggies going to market.

In December 2016, frozen pork belly inventory totaled 17.8 million pounds, the lowest level since 1957, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

As a result, prices are on the rise. The council reports pork belly prices have increased 20 percent in January. Officials said increased foreign demand might account for the decline in inventory. Hog farmers export approximately 26 percent of total productions, the council said.

“While bacon may become more expensive for consumers, rest assured pork industry will not run out of supply,” said Deaton."

I like bacon, but I agree...the "Bacon, Bacon, BACON, ! thing is overdone.

I got foolish and picked up a couple of Bacon Salt products a couple of years back. It was alright...but not great.

I can speak on this one since my wife has a family member that has a pig slaughter house down south.
We just picked up 30lbs of bacon when we were there for Christmas.
Yes, America loves bacon but it's all about the price.
Up until a couple of years ago it was priced insane and no one was buying it so the inventories were high.
Now people have been buying a lot of it and apparently farmers never bulked up on the pig farms so they are jacking bacon prices again.
People will stop buying bacon yet again.
A stupid cycle.
I will miss bacon until it comes back down.

Don't care for it, myself. I think I've eaten it once, while visiting my brother, in the last 10 years. Maybe more like once in the last 20 years, tbh.

Since we're on bacon what do you think of the pre cooked type heated up compared to the old fashioned raw type after you cook it?

Funny I said something similar to my wife just a few days ago.

"I like bacon, it's good. But the internet needs to calm down about it."

More than two or three pieces and I feel sick for an entire day while it moves through my system.

Also did not know there was a "pork reserve."

Maybe that's what's in Fort Knox?

it's funny but I've never had bacon.

I love pancetta cubes with raw eggs and pepper and some pecorino in pasta alla carbonara though.

It's good, and prices are soaring where I live, however my newfound nitrite allergy now keeps me in check.

Better nutrition by force I call it.

I love bacon, but yeah, the hype train for bacon left a few years ago. Although I will say, I've never had anything "with bacon" I didn't like.

That's only $0.86 per pound. Back in August 2015, it was $1.70 per pound, So current prices are still cheap compared to couple years ago. I buy and eat 3 pounds of Kirkland Center Cut Thick Sliced Danish bacon every week. The price has stayed the same $9.99 for couple years.

Bacon is probably the most overrated food out there.

It's the hipsters and occasional bacon eaters that hype it up. People who eat bacon regularly already know bacon is good. They just quietly go about eating it.

I love bacon and think it is magnificent. But, it has its place. Bacon does not belong with iced creams or with cup cakes or any other desert.
Candied Bacon is wasted bacon!

Amen to Kirkland bacon. I love that stuff and it is a great value for quality bacon. My wife cooks me bacon and fried eggs every weekend and that is something I look forward to every week.
