America is FAT

Well, thus saith Dave Barry in this column.

Do we want the Hungry Human Burger 'n' Bacon 'n' Cheese 'n' Egg 'n' Sausage 'n' Slab o' Lard Combo Deluxe with a large order of fries? Or with a really large order of fries?

🙂

dang, you're making me hungry. Take off that slab o'lard and that would be something I could really go for right now.

It's true. America is fat and getting fatter. Just look around at all the disgusting huge, foul, make me sick to look at people, and then go find some stats on how many of these land-whales are being treated for their obesity. What a waste.

If kids can say no to drugs why can't fully-grown adults say no to that 4th bag of party chips? If you've already eaten a large pizza and a half gallon of pop for dinner, plus a quart of ice cream for desert do you really need those chips? Honestly?

lol. Hilarious. I completely agree though. If they are fat beyond their control then its completely understandable. But for the most part, fat people are a result of simply eating too much. GO ON A FREAKIN DIET. I hate to see tax dollars going to pay for your medical bills simply because you wouldn't say no to that freakin next bag of chips as Skoorb says.

Heh...exactly what I was thinking 😉

Yeah like 99% of people. Fat doesn't come from thin air. By definition it comes from eating more food than your body needs. Unless you have some ridiculous medical illness most people are fat from poor diet, lack of excercise, poor diet, and poor diet. Sure it takes more will power for those who get hungry quicker than others but ultimately that is all it ever comes down to - will power. I have about 10 pounds I'd like to loes to be ideal but I blame it on nothing but my own laziness, because anything else is a cop-out.

I think the problem is that people REFUSE to be active! Some people eat relatively well and would be in good shape if they just MOVED a little. But NOOOOOO, they want to sit on their asses in front of the TV or computer and just get fatter and fatter.

That is one factor for sure but I think diet is more responsible for it. You look around my office and these people don't do much excercise and eat fastfood every day. Unless they were going to run for an hour every morning they'd still be gaining weight. Reasonable excercise can burn say 1500 calories a week for an adult (walking several times a week since most are too fat/lazy to run) but a 6 pack of beer and pizza can add 1500 calories in a night.

"...corpulence, obesity... whatever you call it... it's still just being a big fat@$$." 😀
And yes, Americans are fat... we in general don't eat very well, don't exercise much, don't sleep enough, etcetcetc. Stupid lazy Americans! LOL it's kinda sad that it's true that it doesn't take that many fat people to throw off all the healthy people in the statistics.

If by "doesn't take that many" you mean almost 2/3 of Americans I agree with ya 🙂

I agree completely. Americans need to lose weight, the more the better. If we get rid of the fat people, I'll look less like a flagpole. 😉

Agree with everything except the exercise part. Americans exercise more on average than most countries, from what I've seen. The problem is that the individuals who need the exercise the most are not the ones doing it. 😛 Thus, the population has polarized into two large groups: the Fat and the Fit.

LOL! (Feeling so ticklish today. 😱) I think we agree 100% here. It bugs me to watch Americans--kids especially--grow as chubby as hell and then buy this junk foods on a daily basis. I remember my high school's softball coach: He would have his family at Jack in the Box every single morning. I saw them as I walked to school everyday. It was pathetic 'cuz of course they were all chubby (his wife, his son, his daughter and himself).

It was a sad situation. I wondered if it was a matter of time or just laziness. Now it isn't so traditional to see women or men eat home-made food. Now, I know I'm guilty of it since I cannot cook myself. But believe me, rather than eat outside food on a daily basis, I will eat some home-made junk I can put my hand on.

I was only trying to personalise the situation. Nevertheless, this is a big problem that has affected so many American families. Someone at another forum recently posted a report on the increase in overweightness amongst American kids. There was a poverty connection, but I don't buy that crap really, for even wealthy families have overweight kids.

As pointed out in my nutrition book, pets of families with overweight members are usually overweight too, so it is not a matter of genetics either. In the industralised nations especially, it is a matter of having too much to eat. I, for one, endeavour to practice the concept of moderation. So, do not for a moment assume that I do not eat junk foods. I eat them . . . a lot even. 😱 It's just I learn not to eat them on a daily or weekly basis. I learn to break them into parts too, so I don't consume a bowl of ice cream in a second. Moderation is always the best resolution.

I'm physically fit and slender. I do not exercise, except every chance I have to walk I would, rather than take a ride in or drive a car. But that rarely happens, yet I'm able to maintain a reasonable shape and stay physically fit. I simply endeavour to eat moderately, despite the slight upper hand I have with a natural tendency to stay slender. If I were to get greedy at any point, I will begin visiting the gym or jogging on a daily basis; for I cannot have my cake and eat it too.

In a nutshell, greed and absolute pleasure regardless comes with a price. You should be prepared to accept its consequences, for no good thing comes for free or is easy to obtain. 🙂
