America is doomed part XXIX. Trolling gets you 8 years in jail

Land of the free baby. Thought crime is the new frontier. Wait until they start applying statistical analysis to your email, and online communications...

I wonder if they will start arresting people for destroying ships and podding people in EvE Online 🙂

The rights of Americans slowly get stripped away like a python slowly suffocating its victim. How long before we end up like NK.

Who knows, maybe we already are and dont realize it yet? Just wait until they get done building that wall along the Mexico border. We like to believe they are designed to keep people out. But history has shown they are often used to keep people in.

Avoid the rush. Start sucking up to Dear Leader Obama now.

This goes beyond the president and congress. We vote for who is presented to us on a silver platter, who has been vetted by the bigwigs with fat pockets and big influence.

This kind of stuff has been in action for way beyond Obama. Its obvious you have been drinking the coolaid and falling for the game. Follow the money.

I can totally understand investigating someone who said something like that, but I don't understand jailing him if there's no evidence it was anything other than a stupid comment.

Someone should tip the Austin police off to 4chan.

The people got what they asked for. That's what happens when you vote for "the best of two evils", instead of voting the best person for the job. There's more than two parties, and regardless of your ideology, there's a better choice than Republicrat. One only has to do their job and vote for them.

I don't get this part of the story:

"a Canadian woman who saw the post looked up Carter’s Austin address, determined that it was near an elementary school, and called the police."

In the beginning of the article they made it sound like he said this in-game, then later it is referenced as a post

If it was in-game then how could anyone have looked him up? or did he post this on a forum or Twitter or something? Even then, how could a random lady "look up" his personal street address?

I've never played LoL but that seems strange

EDIT: Sounds like this all occurred on Facebook, and had nothing to do with LoL... unless he happened to be playing LoL at the time of the Facebook posts (seems like they were arguing over LoL)

Seems like all these kids getting persecuted for this stuff lately is happening on Facebook, frankly I feel like that makes him a lot stupider for posting something like that to FB... with what must have been public settings I assume

OP's situation is stupid, but I think the reactions would be vastly different were it a little kid getting harassed with mean messages or something. Which to me is intrinsically the same thing more or less; saying something mean/inappropriate [to incite a reaction]. OP was obviously joking, but what's to say the kid that calls your daughter a fucking ugly wise and beautiful woman isn't just joking too?

It's possible there's more to the story. Maybe he's done this before and been warned? Maybe the police found some evidence that his "threat" was actually more credible than the article would lead you to believe?

Of course it's also possible that there's not really any more to the story and it really is as ridiculous as the article makes it seem.

neither scenario warrants 8 years in jail.

honestly i can see her being concerned and i can even see the popo looking into it, but after they go and see that this dude does not have bombs. has no record and is in fact not planning on bombing anything, thats where it should end

This. How does the DA imagine his image will fare when this kid has to be exonerated?

A swift raid on the house, investigation into actual plans made, armaments collected or planned for, etc, and then releasing the guy if no threat perceived would have been the best way.
(Obviously the investigators should be able to differentiate between a gun owned and secured by the dad vs stocked up under the bed by a teenager).

I hope he ends up winning a ton of money from the county as a result. Would serve as a good warning to other over-zealous DAs.

but but guys, the government is only used for good! They never do anything knee jerk that isn't good for the people! Think of the CHILDREN!

Then again, if he said this on FB he deserves what he gets. Everyone knows by now that FB is just ripe for the moral jurisdiction pickings. I honestly can't believe people still post to that piece of trash after everything that's happened.

Why even investigate it? Even without the "lol jk" it's clearly sarcastic. Would you investigate an author for writing a novel with a murder in it? No, because there is clearly no intent to harm anyone.

Because a paranoid soccer mom reported it. If they hadn't investigated it, and he HAD done something, you would hear the opposite screams of "you were told and you did nothing".

It's kind of a catch 22.

You guys do know about the origins of the Espionage Act, right? And the Alien and Sedition Acts? People have been thrown in jail for years for even mild criticisms of the government or support for pacifism loads of times throughout American history. I know that doesn't fit your "things are getting worse and worse!!!!" argument, but things have always been shit. They're less shit in some ways today, more shit in others. The same will be true in 100 more years.

The problem is that comes with more power of the government. The more you give them, the more they can get away with. Sure there's always things that have happened, but most of it is behind the scenes under everyone's nose. When they start doing it blatantly out in the open, it's probably past time to be concerned.
