AMDZone Resorts to Disgraceful Name-calling

Recently Emulators.com reversed their stance on the Pentium 4, concluding that Intel's flagship processor is now worth buying. The article in general would probably boil the blood of any AMD fanboy, and apparently that has aroused AMDZone's Chris Tom.

Towards the bottom of the above linked article there lies 4 emails Chris Tom sent to the writer of the Emulators.com article, Darek Mihocka. Here are the subject titles of the 4 emails Chris Tom sent to Darek Mihocka:

- Ahh, Comdex, I'll see you in November to you a nice friendly f*ck you in person. Oh yeah, and f*ck you.
- Ohh, whoops, I forgot one thing, f*ck you.
- The more I read that f*cking bullsh*t the more pissed off I get. You can burn in hell you little prick. I don't get sh*t from AMD, and the banner ads I run on boycottrambus.com don't even pay enough for the hosting. Go f*ck yourself you hypocritical prick.
- F*ck you asshole, I don't make hardly any f*cking money on the site. Go handle yourself you pathetic little bitch. Your true colors have showed. F*ck off.

I had to edit the cuss words with "*", since they aren't allowed on the forums.

I find this kind of behavior to be sickening, childish, and just plain uncalled for. This is assuming Darek didn't instigate anything (even if he did, it still doesn't justify Mr. Tom's responses).

AMDZone is an excellent place to catch up on your AMD hardware news, but these latest emails just make me never want to visit AMDZone again.

Heh heh, the guy who wrote the artical over ar emulators.com was pretty stupid to post such a biasd statement. Obviously the P4 will be able to overtake an Anthlon XP, seeing as thats what it was developed fto do
rolleye.gif
. The Athlon was ment to make sushi out the P3, which it did. The athlon core is coming close to the end of it's life cycle, and AMD will surely respond to the P4 like Intel did to the Athlon.

I was rolling on the floor laughing when the irony of this whole situation dawned on me a few days ago. 6 months ago when I posted the results of the Round 3 benchmark and declared the Athlon XP the faster chip over the Pentium 4, some people apparently didn't bother to read the fine print in my writing and see some ominous warning signs that I was pointing at. i.e., that it was within Intel's grasp to catch up to and overtake AMD in the CPU battle if they so chose. Over the past 5 or so months I've been busy building and testing various Intel and AMD based machines for this next round of benchmarks, and the results are definitely in Intel's favor, as I will explain.

When I was editing our web site the morning of April 1 to announce the Pentium 4's new status as fastest chip, barely minutes afterward I started receiving emails from confused and angry Athlon supporters who responded in any manner of ways from complete disbelief: "this is an April's Fool's joke, right?" to complete hatred: "Your site is EVIL! Death to Pentium 4!"

But yes, it's true. When I declared on April 1 that the Pentium 4 beat AMD and got my approval, I wasn't kidding at all. But the irony is just too funny. What better time than April Fool's Day than for Intel to finally get the last laugh against AMD by launching the 2.4 GHz Pentium 4 processor, a sledgehammer of an upgrade over their earlier 2.0 and 2.2 GHz parts? The timing was just too perfect and I couldn't resist folks. I'm still busy typing in the data and prettying it for you, so the actual benchmark results will be posted in a few days. But I couldn't pass up on making the announcement on April 1. My kudos go out to the engineers at Intel for pulling it off and shipping the world's fastest PC processor and doing so with a humorous sense of timing.

So now that we've all had a good laugh, let's take a look at the AMD train wreck and also look at what Intel has done in the past 6 months since Round 3 to overtake AMD.

Its a little discomforting to know someone can pull Irony out of this(more likely pulled it out of his a**). I don't see how someone could say Intel got the last laugh, as if AMD or any chip maker for that matter is somehow lightyears behind Intel?. It was a very stupid move on his part to post such non-sense and he should have known better, especialy when he's writing articals for a major site. Any fanboys do get a litte out of hand sometimes, only because they get "set in their ways" of thinking one thing is WAY better than the other. This kind of stuff is indeed sickening and pointless as well.

Did you read the link that Chris Tom posted on AMDZone, though, about someone's experiences dealing with Darek over at Emulators.com on the business side? That's worth a read. Of course we're only getting half the story through the emails that the person posted that were from Darek, but having worked in customer service, I would have gotten SO fired if--for any reason whatsoever, even if the customer mooned me in person--I said anything along the lines of what Darke said to the person, who was a customer of his, that he "lays out for Farmer Jim and takes it up the ***." That is INEXCUSABLE in ANY situation for a businessman to say that. Chris Tom may be a jackass and a die-hard AMD zealot (hey, even I can recognize that the P4 is finally overtaking the Athlon), but at least he doesn't treat his audience that way.

I agree with some of Darek's comments (but his findings that the Athlon XP CPUs are unstable is bull, it's usually another component in the system like the motherboard which is never mentions), and I agree with some of Chris'. Darek had no right to call Chris a fraud for his position, and Chris had no right to get so worked up over a little piece of silicon.

Darek, however, should be reprimanded by the BBB if the treatment of that customer is the way he treats other customers as well.

I don't know if it is just me, but from reading the subjects of those 4 emails it looks plainly obvious that they are all in seperate response to other emails, which I obviously don't know the subjects of. I can tell they weren't just sent in succession, because in succession they don't make any sense.

Ah well, those emails don't sound very professional, but then again, I don't read amdzone :p

Well, it's been a relatively "long" time since P4 over took AthlonXP for the "speed king" title.

Why the hell to people get so worked up about Intel and AMD? I mean does someone get executed within the AMD family if a consumer decides to part with his/her AMD chip in favor of an Intel processor? Does someone get executed within the Intel family if a consumer decides to part with his/her Intel chip in favor of an AMD processor?

I couldn't agree more! I can't think of much that is more assinine than someone getting all worked up because one CPU is slightly faster than another. Maybe if you were on the design team that was responsible for the engineering of either CPU, but for consumers to get all worked up over it is totally foolish.

It's the same thing with video cards in the age old ATi vs. nVidia debate and all the rest. People choose a favourite company and defend them and their products to the death. Their self esteem is based on the competitive success of their favored corporation in the market.

Being a "zealot" to a corporation is just plain stupid. AMD, Intel etc has one goal... to make money. They arent in the market to satisfy their 'loyal' customers. They are there to make money, and you can bet they'll do so anyway they can.

I honestly believe that if a company like nVidia and the like released a sack of $hit in a box, and told you to dump it on your computer then there would be a handful of people here that would purchase it and dump it on their system and tell us it improved performance.

As for Darek Mihocka, I have no respect for him or his articles. He is a part of the rareified territory occupied by Van Smith, Steve Gibson etc that are completely and utterly unreliable, biased, and misleading in virtually everything they write. Though at least Gibson and Smith are intelligent, I'm not at all convinced Mihocka is particularly knowledgeable either.

And as to Chris Tom, well he has his own little battles with at least half a dozen webmasters. He's fought with Kyle at HardOCP, JC, Van Smith, Tom Pabst, and a few others. He has a distinct tendency to get a little obsessive anytime someone states anything overly negative or hints that Chris Tom may make a profit on his site or is affiliated with AMD, or could do a better job on his articles. He doesnt take well to criticism at all.
This is just another in his long line of publicized battles with various webmasters, it's hardly the first and I doubt it'll be the last.

I have no idea why some people are die hard AMD or Intel fans. The way I look at it is that I'll buy the fastest for the least amount of money. Right now I'm running an Athlon. If Intel prices come down and outperform AMD. Screw AMD...Intel here I come.

The only thing I care about is my wallet.

I don't know but I hope it doesn't stop. I started lurking bulletin boards to get answers (which I always get so thank you). I didn't realize that entertainment was provided as well as knowledge. Same game - different players. 4 years ago they were arguing about whether the VooDoo or TNT ruled. The horsesassedness is not limited to the masses either. The revered webmasters must pile on as well. WATCHING a p!ss!ng match is great fun because I go home dry and leave no lingering stench.

I can't stand Chris Tom, had an email conversation with him once, all he did was try to make money off of it.

Personally, I don't care if intel is the fastest right now. I don't care if nvidia makes faster cards. I couldn't give a damn if the audigy uses less cpu power then the other sound cards.

I use a product that works, where the price is right, and one that won't give me troubles in the future. There is no need to get worked up over one site or person's ignorance, most people are ignorant anyway, you can't stop that. Anyone that says intel is faster right now isn't looking ahead, what happens when amd moves to .13?
The funny thing is that the p4 couldn't beat the athlon on its starting die size, at 2Ghz the p4 was maxed out, and the athlon is still moving. On the SOI, and .13, the athlon may roll right past the p4.

So you guys can't understand why some people get all worked up over the subject AMD vs Intel ... have you asked yourselves what the difference between supporting Intel and supporting Liverpool or L.A. Lakers is? I personally can't see one ...

Bah, blown out of scale. So what if 2 people are yelling at each other... what, do we expect them, just beacuse they are webmasters, to lose all humanity?

Seriously... maybe Darek dated his sister... or ex-wife.... or mom.... or all of the above. How do we know? ;]

This doesn't make sense at all. You are comparing some present facts with some potential expectations (which may or may not be true). It's like saying my future p4 10 GHz will be faster than XP 2500+, at the time XP 2500+ is the fastest. It's not like your cpu is a bio organism, like when you buy it and the same one (the original one you bought) suppose to grow over the years.

I guess you also called all the insightful reviewers (who reviewed the fastest p4) aren't looking ahead either ;).

Finish it off with a similar line as yours.

Anyone that says AMD is faster in the future isn't looking ahead, what happens when Intel moves to [insert the most advance fab technology available] and [insert the fastest performance capable (no, not the same as available :p ) ]

Really good read the two sites. It just goes to show why I frequent this site. Name calling and the whole general name calling is rather boring. Both gentlemen seem to have problems with staying consistant or fair. I own both AMD and Intel systems and find both to be of exceptional quality. It is not the facts which they are arguing about that I find entertaining, it is the Jr. High behavior of both.

A flame war of AMD vs. Intel is so insane. Buy what you like and enjoy how far we have come in such a short time.
