Hi,

just wondering if an AMDXP 1800+ Palomino core can be used on a Soltek 75FRN2-L mobo, using 2x512mb PC3200 rams in dual channel mode at 400mhz (200mhzddr) ? or is this rig possible at all? if so, how do i go about setting it up, what kind of settings in bios, what ratio settings should FSB:MEM be? thanx in advance for your help.

  • Supports Dual Channel DDR SDRAM @ *400/333/266 MHz

but can i specifically use 2x512mb PC3200 400mhz DDR rams in dual channel mode? Or do i have to be stuck at using PC2100 rams, since the amdxp1800+ fsb is 266mhz(133x2)? that is my main concern

you can change this in your BIOS. instead of SPD, run it insync to the 1800 pally which is 266. and run it dual channel 266. this means u should be able to lower ur latency a lot. 2-2-2-5, etc.. whatever

I think the person is wondering can they run dual channel at 400 while cpu is running at 266. Is it possible cuz I'd like to know too. also would adding a 3rd stick of ram disable dual channel?

theres no performance benefit, acutally a performance deficit if you run ur ram faster than your cpu. dual channel 266 is best for a 266fsb cpu, running dual channel 400 for a 266fsb cpu is no good.

cool, and for my other question, should I just go ahead and add a third stick of ram and forget DC then?

you will still run in dual channel. it all depends on the channels amount. if you have 512MB in channel 1, 1GB in channel 2, you will have 1GB running in dual channel, and the leftover, 512MB will be run as single channel

i plan on using 256 sticks in channels 1 and 3 and a 512 stick in channel 2, i thought i read that that wasn't DC.

Doh!

You should have 2 sticks of 256 in slot 1&2(slots that are close together) and 512 in slot 3 (furthest from the cpu socket). That'll be DC.

you can use the PC3200, memory is backwards compatible. it won't run at 400Mhz unless the mobo/CPU are also. it will just run at 266. you'll be able to use the most aggressive memory timings :)
