AMDs take on Fermi

that's hilarious. too bad it was almost as late as fermi, it took them 5 months to come out with this? we're just a few months away from the NEXT round. say whatever you want about nivida's pr team, they would have already made this video before amd's card was even released if the roles were reversed.

AMD let their driver and GPGPU team make the video. Hoping Via and Intel would do it for them.

That was pretty funny... especially the black guy who leans over and says "i bet we're going to find something green in there"...

On that note though, I just bought a 470 over the weekend, and I used to have a 5870, and while the 5870 was definitely cooler than the 4870x2 that it replaced, the 470 is nowhere near as hot and loud as people are making them out to be. In fact if all the reviewers hadn't mentioned it, I would have never thought twice about it.

their Driver AND GPGPU teams? lol.. dont be so sore, enjoy the movie!

The ending comment really had me laughing, didnt expect it at all 😀

The GTX 480 is clearly the worst offender. The GTX 470 is about the level of the GTX285/GTX275 - it only looks bad because the 5870/5850 consumes alot less power. Also remember hot and loud is also related to the cooler used - a card that consumes less power and so generate less heat can still be measured as hotter if its cooler dissipates less heat. Same with noise.

Under the exact same cooler solution, the 5870 would be a lot less hot and more silent than the GTX 470.

Not bad, but every other Fermi spoof video I saw was funnier (the ninja fight and the Hitler video), as was Nvidia's own spoof about the Geforce fx5800.

They really should put more effort into game developer relations instead of making half-assed videos that don't do anything but spread FUD about the competition.

Great video!! I agree with you about the 470. Mine idles at 38-41*C at just 40 percent fan speed. I can idle at 43*C at just 32 percent fan speed. At load the card never exceeds 77*C at less than 70 percent fan speed. Overclocks to 750mhz GPU on stock voltage (1.0V). I mentioned this several times before, but it appears every single Fermi review in the last 3+ months simply used automatic fan profiles. NV set conservative fan profiles of 48-50 percent fan speed at load. This is what is getting the cards to 95*C.

Now you can get an Asus GTX470 for $270 and a bunch of GTX470s for $300 at the Egg. Too many negative reviews and $360/$500 (470/480) pricing for 3 months ensured little interest for GF100 this round. With current 470 pricing though, 5870s are irrelevant altogether and 5850 finally has a good alternative at $270.

interesting to see who thinks the video was a waste of time. Its advertising geez. When nV do it, they are brilliant, when AMD try it, its a waste of time.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised.

Not true. I have no issue with advertising from either side, but a video about Fermi heat/power req is a little tired IMO. How many ways can it be said that Fermi is a big/power hunger chip? We know... We knew before it launched.

Besides, it's not as if Radeons are exactly frosty... Remember that their flagship card had to be cut down to meet PCIe power spec requirements. It's just tried FUD at this point.

But their flagship card is still 2x full Cypress architecture chps only with reduced clocks.
Although they arent frosty, they are still miles ahead of the top Fermi cards, which arent even the full speced ones. The fully speced ones are where? not in retail atleast.

My point being that you are trying to take away from the strong sides of the cypress architecture: power efficiency is one of those.

Also, YOU knew. but you are a hardware forum guy, like me. The ad will likely hit a different crowd and noone had told them of Fermi being a heat beacon (look, im starting to repeat it, to make it true...)

again: GG AMD for getting on the offensive.

When's the last time the consensus on any sort of advertising done by nvidia was seen as brilliant around here?
If anything, it's interesting to see who's willing to defend a video like this. You really need to see the world through ati-colored glasses to not notice how low this is going.

I like that video, it was funny. Why do you think I didn't go for 470/480...😉

All said and done driver stability is where it counts and ATI f...ed up and fell behind once again in my book... (history repeats itself)

the last time Nvidia did advertizing, they said "wait for it". I think you know the concensus of these forums, nvidias facebook page, basicly EVERY site on the nett regarding that fiasco.

This isnt low by any means. and it wont get so by you saying it is. This is Apple/Microsoft type of advertizing which AMD should be praised for daring to do.

*disclaimer, i have no idea who made the vid aside from the obvious AMD/ATI advertizing, im just saying i enjoyed it. we need more of this and less whining by uptight people

I also don't remember anybody saying nV should stop saying wait for it all over the web instead of getting their horribly delayed out the door.

I like my cool Ati coloured glasses.

My point is that the 5-series are good cards as they are. ATI should spend more resources making them better by working more closely with developers, so we don't have Batman AA and Starcraft 2 'issues' with their cards instead of making mud slinging videos that beat a dead horse. Plus, the video is clearly targeted towards enthusiasts... Who else knows what "Fermi" is?

Positive marketing your products is one thing, but I don't really like mud slinging in any type of advertisement.
