clearly they've spent a lot of time in R&D and tried to make most of it become a reality

From the EETimes article:
AMD is expected to try to make Freedom Fabric an industry standard across x86, graphics and ARM cores, competing with the proprietary Quick Path Interconnect on Intel’s CPUs.

Last week, the RapidIO Trade Association said it is trying to get ARM and its SoC partners to adopt its technology as a processor interconnect.

That sounds rather awesome and a smart move for AMD

AMD bet its future on Seamicros interconnect tech, HyperTransport quickly comes to an end.

Making it a standard sounds good to me, if I'm not mistaken it's very roughly a PCIe based routing scheme.

it's the new name for french fabric

It is a surprisingly needless product name given its sensitive geopolitical connotations.

It has an air of USA-centric cowboy-style marketing hype to it. And for what? I guess if your only two targeted customers are the NSA and Halliburton then the name is goin to be a "mission accomplished" for snagging two contracts...otherwise it carries with it a HUGE cringe factor for just about any other customer rep outside the USA.

Hopefully it gets rebranded at some point. AMD doesn't need any help generating the perception that it is still amateur hour at club AMD, naming your technology "Freedom Fabric" isn't helping dispel that image.

Or it could be in reference to them making an open consortium so that any piece of hardware can sit on it. Freedom to use it however you want kind of thing...

It wasn't named FreedomTransport (hypertransport), and we don't use FDR ram (freedom data-rate), nor do we use Freedom-Fi (Wi-Fi). And I have yet to use FSB (freedom serial bus). Freedom-CL (openCL) anyone?

Wait till next year, can't wait for AMD to start selling "Arab Spring" CPUs :\

When Terrorists attack AMD HQ, it will be because they hate them for their Freedom Fabric!

Pretty sure they were just looking for an alliteration pairing with Fabric. Wonder if "Fabulous" was on the short list.

Perhaps AMD will try to include their work on externally cabled PCIe under this umbrella.
