AMD's price drops have been a success so far...

anyone notice that 90% of active threads are about x2's and not conroes?

They are a success in that it persuades S939 users to stick with AMD instead of jumping ship, because changing platforms are costly. Current S939 users are looking at a $150 upgrade to an X2 3800+ or a total platform upgrade to C2D which would easily cost $500 or more.

Anyone building a new system would be better off with C2D than AM2 with one or two exceptions - those on a tight budget or those who don't require dual core CPUs.

Because Conroe hasn't gone on sale yet. Wait till Thursday and you'll have all Conroe threads.

I thought all the Conroe chips (except the X6800) launch on August 7th?

'Official' launch date is July 28th, vendor availability is a different story though.

Soon ... To my newcastle. :)The main reason is the old AGP slut and I don't care about cpu that much, but since Conroe seems to overclock better and even clock by clock is faster it makes sense for me to upgrade to conroe instead of AM2.

I assume you meant slot? Or was that an intentional joke? ;)

I've decided to try to wait and go Conroe. This is mostly due to my A8N-SLI Premium being a flakey mother. I want a nice solid, reliable Intel board and chip. So I might have to drop more $$$ for DDR2 and whatnot but at least I'll have the stability I currently don't. =\

Meanwhile this current board, cpu, and DDR RAM will hold me over. I hope to wait until mid-august or whenever deals start showing up.

I did see a wendor in Germany saying that the conroes will be available 14th of September...

AMD mobos are also quite cheaper than those for the Conroes, so the total costs for a Conroe system is quite higher. Yea, Conroe is faster, but so is like Mercedes compared to Toyota...and more Toyotas are sold than Mercedes...

Then Kentsfield will arrive soon and my bet is that we will see a brand new chipset as well, so all current cpus will be quite outdated within a year.

But, I´m still going to wait until next week to order my system, in case some Conroes might show up. I´m not willing to wait longer though.

I would like to keep my socket 939 board and just get a cheap X2, but the problem is that I currently only have a gig of DDR RAM, and I really don't feel like investing in another gig of DDR when it's sort of old tech by now (to have 2 GB total). So should I do that anyway and make that cheap upgrade last me at least another 18 months or so, or should I jump platforms?

1 gb should last you for a little while longer (at least until Vista comes out, anyway). An X2 wouldn't be a bad choice.

Exactly, this is pretty much for early next year when Vista comes out, I will want 2 gigs then but will feel stupid spending money on a gig of DDR in early 2007. However jumping to AM2 or socket T won't be cheap and might not offer that many advantages over a s939 X2 and 2 GB DDR.

lol Someone has sharp eyes. I don't know what else I should call it with all these overpriced AGP video cards.

Well honestly I would have stuck with AMD if I had a 939 MB, but I have a older 754 MB. So I need to change platforms anyways, so I may as well go Conroe.

I ordered my socket 939 3800 x2 retail for $160 to my door with thermal paste.... i am going from an overclocked 3500+

I can really use dual core and can't wait for the upgrade. Very cheap considering I literally just drop it in and reattach my current HSF.

Most likely I will make a complete new build using DDR2 and Conroe (if its still on top) when some DX10 hardware comes out along with Vista.

I'm building an entirely new complete system, so Conroe it is for me. I have everything except the processor already in the mail.

The X6800 is supposed to be available on the day of launch. The lower model Conroes and Allendales are available on the 7th.

Why would I spend $1200 on a new conroe build when I could just buy a $200 3800+ X2 and get the oc up to 2.4-2.6. I just need more RAM and new video card....

Same at NCIX:

Core 2 Duo launch will be this Thursday and with the exception of the X6800, everything will be preorders - official ship date is August 7th.
