AMD's next socket?

I am currently on a 5 year old Socket 939 rig and I'm starting to think about my next build. I don't want to get f****d this time like I did by purchasing a Socket 939 mobo only 6 months before AM2 was released.

Has AMD announced when they plan to roll out their next generation socket?

Of course, how do we know that AM3+ itself might be short-lived, such that future CPUs will be APUs based on bulldozer, and not just CPUs, so they will have again, a new socket.

Meh i would just upgrade when you need it, if you get a brand new socket you will be the beta tester for it and all its bugs, if you get one thats nearly EOL well you will get a mature platform but it will be obsolete soon.

Six and half dozen imo. Unless you bought into socket 423/754 like i did D:

AM3+ will have up to 8 core bulldozers so it will have some very capable processors.

Gigabyte and MSI have some 870/890 AM3+ mobos. I would get one of those. The chipset is just over a year old and has all the kinks ironed out. I also think AMD's mobo are better than Intel's.

Just assume that your motherboard and CPU are inseparable, and get a nice CPU. There's just no good way to predict what socket will be forward-compatible, and then when you get one that is, whether your mobo will be able to take the new CPUs, even if it aught to be able to by socket (this has been common for 775, and AM2/AM2+/AM3). If you end up able to upgrade later, that would be awesome, but it's not guaranteed, or even probable.

Hopefully a hell of a lot longer than 1156 (which is what I have).

I'm in a smiliar boat because I have 1155. Which is why I'm seriously looking at AM3+ for my family system.

One of the things I like about Intel is they publish road maps telling us what sockets will be used when. I used to catch garbage from people when I'd bring up that LGA 1156 had a short life span compared to LGA 1366.

It doesn't mean that 1156 sucks, but seriously, Intel needs to stop just throwing away sockets. But I'm sure they know that if they have new sockets and kill off old ones, more people will upgrade more often which equals more money.
