AMDs next chip: AM2 based?

I've been looking for info on AMD's next chip but not finding much. I'm wondering if anybody can tell me anything about it, specifically that it will use AM2 (if this is in an article somewhere and I missed please point me to it). Since they just introduced AM2, I assume they're gonna use it for awhile, but then again they might need something totally new to beat the crap out of Intel again.

I'm trying to decide between getting an E6600 and joining the light side or just getting a cheap X2 and upgrading to whatever AMD comes up with later. Looks like I could get an X2 5200 for only $260 (or go even cheaper), and I've got a lot of good mobos to choose from, or I get an E6600 for around $60 more, and I only seem to have one mobo to choose from (looking for something 650i SLI based). I'm having a hard time deciding, so does anybody know what AMD is planning?

Right now, honestly, the answer is 'Maybe'. AMD claims they will support AM2 for a while, releasing both Brisbane and K8L on AM2. There's also an AM2+, which I'm not too familiar with, and the DDR3 enabled AM3 socket.

Generally speaking, these days, if you want to do a CPU upgrade, plan on a motherboard upgrade as well.

I had the exact same dilemma - Conroe or X2.
After consideration, I chose AMD, mainly because of cost. There was also the issue of platform maturity, which Conroe lacked at the time. The final reason I went with AMD was, as you eluded to, the ability to upgrade to Antares or Altair, which should be atleast a match for Conroe. Before then, I may consider upgrading to a 5600+ or 5800+, when they become available.
Having said that, I am more than satisfied with the performance of this chip, especially with the power it consumes. Upgrading to my current system from my old 3.0GHz P4 was like going from reverse into fifth gear.

Edit:

There are a few articles flying about confirming socket AM2 will support AM3 processors:
Reghardware
DailyTech article

There is Intel's Bloomfield, which will reach 4.0GHz, use CSI and support multithreading, due in 2008. But that will require a new motherboard anyway, whether you go Conroe or not.

AM2+ will be AM2 compatable, but AM2+ chips will have the newer HT 3.0 which can only be utilized on AM2+ mobos. In other words, if you use an AM2+ chip on an AM2 mobo, it will run fine but with HT 2.0 instead of HT 3.0...

Does anyone know why C2D chips having been getting more and more expensive? at Newegg the price for an E6400 has gone from about $218 to 230, where it is now....
