He definatly quit, and from what I'm reading, he caught AMD by surprise.
My quess is he didn't want to have to deal with trying to sell Barcelona.
You'd think that with someone that high up, that they'd let him stick around for a couple weeks to prepare. Perhaps he was "asked to quit" so that he could save face? You know, out of respect.
