Yeah. It was really a bad move of ATI to piggyback on that name. Now, when people google for Trillian, do they want the IM client, or the video card? Baaad, ATI.

I'm sure it's just a code name, and it's really meant to obsucre information so that no info is leaked to competitors. I mean it's not like googling cyprus, sonoma, or evergreen is going to get you the respective products. If it was called 5870+ or 5890 then everyone would have a good idea what it actually was.

Key statements in TPU's review of 5870 were indicative that AMD "left room" for an enhancement:

"If you look closer you can spot some extra space on the PCB to replace a 6-pin connector with an 8-pin connector."

"You can also see that AMD has left some empty spots in their PCB design for possible improvements by adding more phases."

4870 to 4890 as 5870 is to 5890? That'd be my guess. It's a great natural progression that will improve on an already superb card. Fermi or not, I vote for a refresh! Asus and MSI are about to show what this gpu can do with a power enhancement..

I want information about the character from Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.

I do think the ASUS/MSI custom PCB cards will be interesting.

At the same time I am hoping a reduction in die size (similar to RV790) allows ATI to put back in some of the features they said they left out in the recent Anandtech RV870 story

P.S. Does anyone know if reducing redundancy within the Cypress core (and thus making it smaller) affects heat output? For example, could reducing the number of Vias either make the chip run cooler or warmer?

so this is what qualifies for industry insight?

a card that amd announced at the 5870 launch, 5 months ago, reviewed and analysed by another website. http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2021179

and somehow the fact that it is coming out now is somehow bad news for amd. or at least not bad news for nvidia. lol.

i've never read or followed any of these video pundits(semiaccurate, brighterside, fudzilla) before now, just because i never cared about the latest greatest videocard or how soon i could buy it. But this stuff coming from the nvidia fanatics is kind of sad.

i read the reviews when the fx5x00 series and hd2900 came out. the 2 companies will have up and down years and no one stays on top forever(except maybe MS). It's all good, the pendulum will swing the other way eventually.

If AMD could pull the 4890 out of the 4870, how could they not put out a "5890"? If they throw a better cooler on it and the card hits 1.1GHz regularly, I might have to grab one :).

Trillian is not the 6 port Eyefinity edition of the 5870. I believe they are talking about something else. From the article

"Anyway, Trillian is a tuned HD 5870 card with slightly higher performance. Last year AMD boosted HD 4870 specifications with the HD 4890 1GHz card, and this is exactly what we expect this time around."

Boy is my face red, now Fud is saying Trillian is the 6 port Eyefinity edition - http://www.fudzilla.com/content/view/17741/34/
