AMD64 upgrade question

Will future versions of the AMD64 (not fx) have same # pins???? Seems like i've read they are going to make future versions smaller or something.. Just wondering if a new motherboard will be needed to upgrade in the future.

thanks

It will have the same socket, just a smaller die. Just like .18 and .13 Athlons are all still socket A. Socket 754 is going to be here for a while.

If you are talking about 754, that is here to stay. I think that is the only new AMD thing that really sells. I know some people, me included, that got Athlon 64, I don't know anybody that bought FX51. So, do not be afraid of 754. 940 is a different story ...

754 will stay, and 940 will soon be phased out ofr 939, which will stay for the life of amd 64fx. so 754 for amd64, 940 for opteron, 939 for amd 64fx.

As of the current roadmap the Socket-754 processor will not support Dual-Channel memory, but on the plus side they won't require Registered memory either so it's a trade off. Currently they will also only have 512KB L2 cache instead of the 1MB found on the Athlon FX (Socket-940).
