AMD64 Temp Questions

When I run Smartguardian and Prime95 my temps climb to 59 to 63 degrees celsius and my normal temp is 49.

When I read postings by other then mention lower temps even when over clocking. I was running a mild OC FSB 220 and saw the temps in the low 60's

Dropped the FSB back to 200 and still get the same temps.

Is my system running too hot?

I have the following components:

AMD64 3000+ (retail hsf)
DFI Lanparty NF3 250 UT
Muskin 512 pc3200 basci
windows XP sp2
Foxconn case and 350 power supply

new castles run a bit hotter and I believe the DFI reports higher cpu temps then same chip on an epox or msi board...check out ASvalons thread for his sempron...he jumped up in temps for same chip on that board.....

I would run it and just watch for any instability....

I get the EXACT SAME reading with mine. I have the same CPU and Motherboard as you... :)

New Note

I moved my computer under my desk and temps jumped to low to mid 50's idle and 60-64 with prime95 blended running.

I replaced artic silver and movee all cables out of the way and now it runs 52-54 under normal operating.

Why the jump up a few degrees? The case has three fans, ps has two fans, and there is space around the case?

There's a lot less air movement under a desk:

The hot expelled air from your case naturally wants to travel upward,

but then it's blocked by your desktop.

If that's socket 939, it's running rather warm.

My .90nm Winchester 3000+, which I have OC'd to 2.2ghz from 1.8Ghz, runs about 30C idle, 45C load.

Anything Under 60C should be ok, but the cooler the better....

mine runs 59C on load, stock cooler on msi boards, newcastle 2800+. It runs fine for 7 months now but I decided to change the cooler and undervolted it to let it run cooler. Now at 49-52C under load, room temperature 27-33C

I just got my new computer up and running a few hours ago. I've got the same motherboard as the original poster. I was noticing that in my BIOS, my CPU temp was jumping around quite a bit. It was staying around 48C - 49C, but sometimes would mysteriously jump to 52C for about 2 seconds, then go back to 49C.

What programs should I download and use in Windows to monitor my temps? What programs are accurate? Also, I keep reading mixed things about Artic Silver 5, some say it runs hot for a while after installing and then starts dropping temps at around 200 hours of break in, some say it doesn't need break in time, which is it?

My system specs:

DFI LanParty NF3 250gb
Athlon 64 3700+, using AS5 and a Thermaltake Venus 12
1 gig of Corsair PC4400C25
Sapphire X800XT
Seagate 300GB IDE hard drive

Flashing to the latest BIOS fixes the temp bug. I never get higher than 60C and I added .5 volts to overclock. Max load is 60C @1.55 volts.

Metal on metal contact will always transfer heat faster. You only need a paper thin layer of thermal grease. You want to be able to see the core. If you can't see the core visibly, you've put too much thermal grease. I have a Newcastle 2800+ that ran @ 35C idle because I barely put half a grain of rice and spread it all over the core with my finger covered in saran wrap. My new Winchester 3200+ runs @ 30C using the same method.

we'll see how long it lasts... 3000 retail with stock thermal pad, i pulled the stock fan and screwed in a 60mm delta, running 1.664v according to cpu-z to get to 2.31ghz... chipset 32c, cpu 47c with case open running p95 torture... room is around 78f... gonna stuff the mobo in my kid's samurai case, it's got pretty good airflow, shouldn't get too much hotter... may try a little slower fan if it's too noisy in the bedroom...

one thing about these a64 chips is that 50mhz makes a difference in performance and heat from what i'm seeing...

I have my 3000+ NC at 240x10 1.55vcore and I'm idling at 39C and load is at 60C. I hope I'm alright with those temps.

if your's ain't cooked i feel pretty good about mine... i'm playing around with a duct to outside of the case to get cold air and slowing the fan down to 7v to quiet it down... seems to only run up to 50c... pretty good for a stock hs...

do the stock thermal pads seem to need to be 'cooked' in? running them up to 60C might 'thin them out'?

I also have a newcastle 3000+. It is overclocked to 2.4 GHz with no voltage change using only FSB increase to 240 MHz. My temps at idle are 32-35 C and under load are 51 or 52 C. The best thing I ever did for overclocking is to move my office from a third floor bedroom to the basement where the ambient temperature is probaly 5 or 10 degrees F lower. I think having the large concrete heat sink under the carpet layer probably helps too.
