amd64 3200+ to what speed of cpu?

I have AMD 64 3200+, DFI nforce4 board, 6600gt and (512x2) Patriot XBLK.

i want to play like: FEAR, Quake 3 or 4, BF2 and some interense games out there. My budget is 200 for the cpu for right now.

what kind of cpu should i buy for this kind of money?
 
Your processor that you have now is fine, but your videocard wil be what will hold you back from playing FEAR and all those higher end games. I'd recommend upgrading the videocard rather then your processor.
 
the processor you have now is worth 200 dollars. as stated above, you should upgrade your video card. i suggest a 6800gt or x800xl.

your 6600GT is more than adequate for BF2 and FEAR

buying another 1MB of RAM will have a huge positive impact on performance, especially with BF2. Even with a 7800GTX, with only 1mb RAM you will get some stuttering and will be limited as to how high you can turn up Textures and Terrain

but to be fair, 6800GT would be a huge jump as far as other settings are concerned (AA/AF, lighting, higher resolutions, etc.

in order I would get 1)another 1MB RAM 2) sell 6600GT and upgrade to 6800GT or 7800GT
 
umm, what are you talking about? 1mb ram???? anyway, if you are talking about 2gb ram, all that does is maybe decrease loading times. however, the most important thing in gaming is as you said "aa/af, lighting, higher resolutions, etc." so, why would he want to get 2gb ram if all it did was decrease loading times, when he could get a better gfx card that would increase is overall gaming performance by a lot?

dont get anymore ram. top priority is video card. putting 2 6600gt's in sli mode is a waste. its better to get a 6800gt, or 7800gt if you can afford it. just sell the 6600gt.

lol sorry meant 1GB

BF2 uses ~1.7GB RAM with textures @medium, closer to 2GB with textures @high
textures are loaded to system memory, then the pagefile, then the stuttering starts

biggest performance killer running BF2 is not having enough RAM

this is the cause of stuttering in BF2

who cares how high you can run AA/AF, etc. if you still get stuttering?

get the RAM...

FWIW, my settings on 6600GT:
1280x1024, all medium except:
geometry-high
terrain-high
view distance=100%
dyn. shadows & lights-low
AA=2x
AF=medium

~40fps w/Vsync
~55+ without

I can go to 1280x960 or 1027x768 and put everything on "high", but it will not stop the stuttering. putting textures to "low" instantly stops the stuttering becuase it's not getting into the pagefile.

1GB RAM simply isn't enough to handle the textures in BF2. 2GB RAM = no stuttering.

get another 1GB RAM if you play BF2, hang on to the 6600GT until you can afford to upgrade again. But FWIW, this GPU will probably not be enough for new games in a few months. For now, it is fine.

As theman stated, the only game that ive seen 2gb help in is bf2. It doesnt add "performance", it just lowers loading times. I guess in BF2's case, it has problems, and requires more ram to operate normal.... I would say 1GB is plenty of memory for any game, with the exception of maybe bf2.

THe first thing on his list should be a video card. Then maybe a better cpu after that(or maybe get into overclocking with a good hsf?). Then ram is last if he feels like wasting another $100 or so. Thats my 2 cents.

that is the problem, unfortunately, but is the hard reality to play the game stutter-free


I agree that any other game= GPU>CPU>RAM

but for smooth BF2= 2GB RAM>GPU>CPU
assuming you have a reasonable GPU, which 6600GT is more than reasonable

sucks but true

If you're like me and play almost exclusively BF2 right now, another GB is a huge boost

 
Well I dont play BF2, nor plan to, but it is kind of crappy if it needs 2gb just to have smooth gameplay. Thats unfortunate.

lol. he's 100% wrong...buying another gb of ram will only help if you can run the game at HIGHEST of highest possible settings (then 1gb won't help). your 6600 can't do that and another gb of ram won't give a lot of extra frames, if any at all. upgrade your video card.

If i was in your place, I would sell the 6600 GT and use that money along with your 200 dollars to get at least a 6800 GT. 1 GB of ram is a very good amount so you don't need to upgrade that.

sell off the XBLK and buy 2GB value kit-that would be almost a wash, woudln't it?

sell off 6600GT and go with the above-suggested video cards

might still be able to do all that and wind up with 2GB ram AND a better GPU:thumbsup:

sell XBLK~$150
sell 6600GT~$150
now you've got $500

buy 2x1GB Geil value ram (nice chips, btw) for $190
and 6800GT for $290
total of $480

or same RAM@ $190
and 7800GT for $335 (after rebate)
total of $525, just $25 over your budget🙂

I think I will do option 2 for myself after looking at it, lol
 
is there any ram that rated CAS 2.5 not CAS 3 for (2 x 1 GB) 2 GB memory.

i thought CAS 3 is pretty slow for my system.
 
is your CPU a Winchester or Venice?

unfortunately at that price the RAM is all CAS3 in 2x1GB, apparently it's harder to make at tight timings on those big sticks

but if you have a Winnie you might be stuck unless you want to run DDR333 with 4sticks
 
i want to know should i buy Patriot LLK memory (2 x 1 GB) .

i was thinking about buying this memory : PDC1G3200LLK .
